It only becomes a problem when people get offended, and everyone is going to get offended. The thing is you need to tolerate it. That's the beauty of this country. You can/should express yourself how you want and others can do the same. People are way to sensitive. I hate when shit like this happens.

At my high school (I'm a senior) my friend has an anti-Nazi patch on his pants. At our high school and technical school both Principles told him he needs to cover it up. Why? He shouldn't have to cover it up.

I want to get a bunch of atheist shirts before I graduate and see if I get in trouble. I wouldn't be suprised if I did.

From the Wikipedia entry on the Rastafraian movement:

For many Rastas, smoking cannabis (known as ganja, herb, kali, or lamb's bread) is a spiritual act, often accompanied by Bible study

The student in this case appears not to be a Rastafarian, but it's interesting to note that had he been one, his "bong Hits for Jesus" sign would clearly have been a form of religious expression, and punishing him for it would be be a clear case of religous oppression! Would he ever have been censured in that case?

Religious or not though, this is an egregious case of censorship, and it's embarrassing that it has made it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Take the religion aspect out of it: The kid was stupid for bringing up a pro-drug message in school in the first place. It SHOULDN'T have ever got to the Supreme Court, cuz common sense would dictate why he was dumb. Any blasphemy is an afterthought.

Bluzman:

The kid didn't bring the sign to school. He held it outside of his school as a parade passed down the street in front of it, and the parade was not school sponsored at all. Is there a zone outside of a school where free speech is restricted, sort of like how speed limits are lower and drug penalties are stiffer?

The merit of the sign's message (or lack of one) could be debated... but let's be serious. Pro drug? This is far less insidious than the thousands of alcohol and tobacoo advertisements that any kid will see before he or she becomes an adult. This is all just harmless pranking and he should never have gotten in trouble for it.

Brilliantly simple response...

Right again, but the truth is, whoever authored this thread couldn't give a hoot about the student...their entire purpose was to focus on the "religious" message...not only that but I'm sure the ACLU is hoping for a huge payday at the expense of the taxpayers of Juneau, Alaska...

from the article...

"I never professed to be a saint," Frederick, now 23 and teaching English in China, told reporters at an ACLU teleconference.

Yeah, I'll bet he tests China's liberties everyday...

Has the ACLU or AA setup shop in China yet...?
