Is there such an event in the S.F Bay area?

  2. reluctantatheist says:

    What:
Check the SFatheists or Bayareatheists websites. I’m sure there’s something on somebody’s calendar.

    OKee

To plant vegetables in our garden and adopt a New Zealand white rabbit next week from an animal shelter and give him/her a decent home. Every Easter many people become bored of their recently purchased pet store rabbit(s) and take them to the local animal shelter, rabbits are quiet, friendly, and peaceful.

Our xtian “neighbors” are just the opposite of friendly, peaceful, and quiet!

    Evolving is a Happy Equinox!

I might celebrate the autumnal equinox instead. Mar 20, 18.16 hrs UTC. I think the xtians substituted their crazy easter story for the ancient celebration, of, for you in the northern hemi., the end of winter.

This just in: oldest discovery of religion is 70,000 years old.

Only 70,000? The earth and moon have been doing their thing for maybe 4 billion. Man has probably been observing it for more than 2 million and subject to its influences – ie seasons – for 2 – 4 million years.

  8. Apple_Christmas says:

I won’t be doing anything for the equinox; I never do. Nor do I do anything for solstices. I actually feel like joining in on the holidays that all my friends and family celebrate is quite good enough for me!

I understand the motivation to create a sort of holiday that doesn’t have a religious background, but why the equinoxes and solstices? Isn’t it a little ironic for atheists to celebrate a day that has typically been important to very many religions throughout history? Clebrating the equinox and the soltice has a bit of a pagan feel that doesn’t sit well with me.

Why not celebrate something more secular, like the birthdays of Thomas Paine or Robert Ingersoll, maybe?

An open question to anyone who wants to answer: If you celebrate the equinox, why do you celebrate it?

  9. cry4turtles says:

I shall observe the Spring Equinox by looking around. I love to watch Mother Earth wake up after her long winter sleep. The return of the Turkey Buzzards, the greening of the grass, the budding leaves and flowers, and of course–BABIES EVERYWHERE! This is the stuff that spring is made of.

Happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy!

  10. lacy says:

We should all celebrate July 17 because it’s the best day of the year! I will officially be able to walk into a store and buy an alcoholic beverage.

  11. davepete says:

Happy birthday Lacy. Hope you have a great birthday, and stay safe! Personlly, I’ll be doing yardwork, and downing some Guiness.

  13. THE KINGPIN says:

    Felicitations Atheists,

Have you heard about THE HIGHER GROUND?

Every Tuesday at 4pm CT on WMQM 1600 AM Memphis and http://www.WMQM1600.com a Black Pastor and a White Atheist co-host an evocative talk radio show that candidly deals with issues of race, politics and religion. The aspect of this show has been compellingly captured in their book based on the show, which has just been released.

On March 31, 2007 from 11am?2pm at Barnes & Noble in Collierville, TN, at the Avenue Carriage Crossing, outside of Memphis, a watershed moment will occur when The Kingpin Thorne Peters & Pastor Andre Guy host their debut book signing. The very fact that this book is premiering in the C.O.G.I.C. capital is an important step in securing freedom of speech for Atheists. This event will be covered by local media, as well as The Associated Press, and a promotional EPK will be filmed and sent to The Montel Williams Show; The Oprah Winfrey Show; CNN and national media outlets, so look your best for the cameras and be profound in your sound bites.

This is an event that demands high visibility public participation of Atheists everywhere. We must put ourselves out there to counterbalance the Christian crusaders who will be there in a show of ignorance to yet again denounce what they cannot comprehend and will not accept.

It is time for Atheists to demand the right to be free of religious bigotry . . . we?re still only one step away from being tarred and feathered here in The Dusk Ages. THE HIGHER GROUND is the forum for Atheists to express themselves to a largely Christian audience to let them know that we are not of Satan and we do not seek to convert the God worshippers . . . we merely ask that they end the discrimination and murder in the name of God and religion for the sake of mankind. It has been Christians who have gone forth for 2 millennia and counting, murdering and destroying humanity on an epic scale, while we merely seek to live in peace with our neighbors here and in the cosmos . . . yet they label us as evil.

So please move heaven and earth to be in attendance, pass the word to all your friends in our situation. Even if they do not wish to be identified, their presence will be counted on.

Do you have your ATHEISTS NEVER KILL IN THE NAME OF GOD Apparel? It is a magnificent design with flames as a backdrop. Do you have your ATHEISTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN FOXHOLES apparel? This slogan proudly has an American flag backdrop. These are original creations from The Kingpin Thorne Peters and it is important that every Atheist find the courage to openly wear these powerful symbols that represent our philosophies. These are the statements that will become our rallying cry as we seek to defend ourselves against the most politically religious era in history. So visit the gift shop at

The wording makes this confusing and leads to some basic violations of inference. Just because this is the oldest ritual discovered does not imply that we have discovered THE oldest ritual. Just the oldest ritual as yet…

And for the record, anatomically modern humans have only been around about 130,000 years. While you are correct that the genus homo is about 2 – 2.5 millions years old, it might be possible that only Homo sapiens, neanderthalis and floresiensis shared the cognitive architecture to make ritual behavior possible.

So for archeologists 70,000 is pretty good in terms of digging up evidence. That doesn’t mean there were people doing silly rituals before that.

arg! the last sentence should read ‘That doesn’t mean there WEREN’T people doing silly rituals before that.’
