CNN claims it was “mistakenly” omitted.

  3. avatar karen says:

No mistake. Part of gawd’s plan. He’s cracking down on that graven images rule.

  4. avatar wisconsinatheist says:

If anything, I’m just glad that it’s printed on the side and you actually have to look for it, rather than it being in your face. It’s a good thing that god is now secondary.

  5. avatar Bones says:

perhaps they could simply reserve those coins for us atheists.

  6. avatar rna2dna says:

The atheist coins are worth fifty times as much as the christian coins. That is as it should be.

  7. avatar rna2dna says:

Wait a minute, if we “cross out” the phrase from paper money is it worth more too?

I like the term “cross out” :-)

  8. avatar karen says:

    rna2dna
Well, it’s *worth* the look on the clerk’s face when you hand over the bills with the crossed-out words side facing up!
That reminds me, I have some bills to constitutionalize.

  9. avatar leestein says:

Hmmmm. Being that these “defective” coins are so popular, maybe they should be considered a successful pilot project
to remove the words from all coinage here.

  10. avatar Zac Hunter says:

Yeah, a great way to end inflation!

  11. avatar alexatheist says:

Our original national motto which was also printed on money was the Latin phrase “E pluribus unum” which translates as “Out of many, one”. This was a uniting motto and was changed to the divisive “In god We Trust” in the recent past. Let’s be true to our collective American history and our Constitution and rally to have it changed back.

  12. avatar Celebrant Prince says:

Obviously, the Mint had it right the first time.

  13. avatar Apple_Christmas says:

I find it ironic that some people got all in a tizzy when they thought the motto “In God We Trust” was left off purposely, when in fact it was designed to be on the edge of the coin all along. I mean… how many gazillions of coins with the motto have been struck over the years? Would it kill ya if just a few had no reference to God on them? Especially ones that will hardly get any use at all outside of post office vending machines?

Atheists get all the bad press for wanting the motto taken off, and most people seem to think that we’re making a big deal out of nothing. But if this actually were intentional, the Bill O’Reilly’s and the John Gibsons of the world would be busy lighting a fire under any Christian who would listen.

  14. avatar RoostaNH says:

I kinda like the fact that the first godless coin sold for $600 and then as it was realized to be more common, the price fell to $50! If I get one of these coins, I’m gonna try to convince people that I have the $600 one!

  15. avatar reason says:

alexatheist its a shame a brit like you has more respect for our national heritage then many biblethumping superpatriots who were born here.

  16. avatar alexatheist says:

    Reason,
I think it’s exactly because I have an outsider’s perspective on the USA that I am so aware of how priveleged I am to be here. There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done in this nation for freedom and equality but I wouldn’t trade my passport in for that of any other nation. USA! USA! USA! as Homer Simpson would say.

  17. avatar bigjacbigjacbigjac says:

Just as Barney Frank is serving in congress as an openly gay man, soon, I hope, an atheist will be elected to congress. That atheist could bring up this event, and push for the change. I would be proud to watch that on C-SPAN. The believers cannot agree on the nature of god. So, in what, exactly, are they saying we should trust?

  18. avatar bigjacbigjacbigjac says:

Hey! I failed to see the post from 3/5 that said at least one congressperson is, in fact, an atheist, and may come out as such soon. I am very excited. I am. This is me excited. Trust me.

I wrote on the back of my car with a white marker, “Atheists drive better than Christians, because we do not believe in heaven.”

  19. avatar hominid says:

I’ve noticed from some folks who hand me bills that they don’t cross it out but instead just write their phone numbers over it.

  20. avatar FairyDogMother says:

hmmmm, anyone own a Dremel tool?
On the other hand a paper punch works well on bills.
It is money so why does it have to have someone’s religion on it? How about a Star of David– that would rile ‘em up.
    In Dogs I Trust

  21. avatar reason says:

how long is paper money and coins going to be around?

  22. avatar CascadiaEventHorizon says:

    reason:

    For a long time.

I used to do everything digitally, until my identity was stolen. Now I do everything with cash only.

As long as I have it in my hand, I know my money is safe.

  23. avatar hominid says:

reason: Wasn’t there once talk about putting some kind of a mark on us or chip in us at one point which would be the only way we might buy anything? I thought I’d heard that sometime ago and from somewhere.

  24. avatar hominid says:

Oh, and I’d refrain from any call to recall currency. I can recall (from studies) that FDRs recall of gold didn’t go over that well with everyone. I’m not sure where American “standards” fall anymore but am concerned understandably about tto much unthoughtout speculation and the risk factor.

  25. avatar hominid says:

    typo: tto should read too

  26. avatar nikotheris says:

I giggle at the thought that the paper money that has In God We Trust on it passes through the hands of Johns to their whores and so may other “dirty” deals.

    naughtyniko

  27. avatar Friday Pirate says:

I gain an unhealthy amount of satisfaction from crossing out the offending motto from all my paper money. I recently came into possession of a $100 bill, and it felt so good to cross out that line…

Though I suppose that I should like crossing out the phrase on a $1 bill more. Lots more people will see that.

It’s astounding to me that in a nation of such diversity, such an offensive, exclusive, divisive phrase remains on one of the most visible parts of our society.
