We’ve seen the Mormons ignoring the “Giggarish gold tablet inscriptions” and the “Indians-not-really-Jews” things and yet still believe the rest of the pablum they are fed. But Jesus’ dead remains are a pretty good argument against the bodily ressurection to Heaven. Can it ever be proven, and what would it do?http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0207/400762.html
Filmmakers and researchers on Monday unveiled two ancient stone boxes they said may have once contained the remains of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, but several scholars derided the claims made in a new documentary as unfounded and contradictory to basic Christian beliefs. “The Lost Tomb of Jesus,” produced by Oscar-winning director James Cameron and scheduled to air March 4 on the Discovery Channel, argues that 10 small caskets discovered in 1980 in a Jerusalem suburb may have held the bones of Jesus and his family. One of the caskets even bears the title, “Judah, son of Jesus,” hinting that Jesus may have had a son, according to the film.”There’s a definite sense that you have to pinch yourself,” Cameron said Monday at a news conference. He told NBC’S “Today” show earlier that statisticians found “in the range of a couple of million to one” in favor of the documentary’s conclusions about the caskets, or ossuaries.Simcha Jacobovici, the Toronto filmmaker who directed the film, said that a name on one of the ossuaries – “Mariamene” – offers evidence that the tomb is that of Jesus and his family. In early Christian texts, “Mariamene” is the name of Mary Magdalene, he said. The very fact that Jesus had an ossuary would contradict the Christian belief that he was resurrected and ascended to heaven.
It’s amazing the tizzy some people get themselves in to…..

Sorry about that, I read my reply again and it sounds so aggressive, I didn’t intend it that way. It’s just that a co-worker?s wife is expecting a boy and he was talking about getting him cut like if it was the most natural thing in the world. After all, he had been too!
When your only argument is “I suffered so my boy should to”, it just gets to me.
Another co-worker and I managed to convince him that is was a useless procedure that on top of causing his boy much pain, would also deprive him of pleasure. The example that made him understand:
Let’s say you do manual work with a single gloved hand and a bare one. The bare one, being exposed all the time, will develop calluses and thicker skin. The gloved hand will remain soft and its skin will remain sensitive. Foreskin is your glove; don’t throw it away if you don’t have too!
And about hygiene, most boys tend to enjoy cleaning that part as often as possible so it won’t be a problem
Bones, the question I ask myself is this one:
When they say: “Numerous leading scholars, including the Israeli archaeologist who first studied the site, have already rejected the notion that Jesus of Nazareth?s bones were found in the Talpiot tomb.”
Have those scholars presented proof as to why this is a fraud, or is it a fraud because the Bible says Jesus went bodily into heaven and we all know the bible can’t be wrong about anything?
This is a catch 22. Prove it is the body of Jesus and you disprove one of the biggest doctrine of Christianity. Debunk it and you only remind the world that there is not a shred of proof for the guy’s existence.
phreedm
Which begs the question, why didn’t he just stick around?
God has a plan, and it’s a lousy one.
phreedm, If Jesus were to appear today, it would not take decades for people to start writing about him.
Yet, asylums are full of people claiming to be Jesus. You may be right after all!
The best argument I’ve heard concerning circumcision (and one that isn’t in favor of either side) is that a boy should be the same as his father. If a boy is uncircumcised and his father is, then the boy, if he is very young and sees his father’s penis, will feel that he is different and doesn’t belong in the family. That can be very traumatic to a young boy. The same would be true if the boy is circumcised but the father isn’t. While I hate to agree with anything that seems like tradition, I have to agree that that argument makes a lot of sense.

Well, the golden tablets thing made me wonder. No big whoop.

Hey, don’t sweat it.
If ever I have a son, I most certainly WON’T have it done on him.
evilatheistconquerer, I’m sorry but this logic doesn’t work. I’m not cut but my boy is. He asked questions about it and wanted one of his own but i doubt he ever thought I wasn’t his father.
Anyway how many fathers are walking around the house naked in front of their kids?
I love this. The baptist press news claims that the documentary ignores “scientific evidence and logic”. When have they been allowed to use that card????

LMAO!
How many kids get raised in a nudist colony, anyways? Very few in the States, I’d imagine.
Allowed or not, the religionists have been appropriating the good names of science and logic for a long time.
The first that come to mind are the scientific creationists. They talk windily about geographic strata and flood deposits, moon dust, etc. I lump the Intelligent Designists in here as well, with their probability calculations and molecular components of flagella.
How kangaroos got from the middle east to Australia is one of their more humourous attempts to wear the mantle of science.
Don’t you know that the original two kangaroos traveled quickly across Asia on a narrow path, multiplying as they went, yet never tarrying? There may still be fossil kangaroos in Asia yet to be discovered that will verify the Bible tale! To get to Australia, there must have been a land bridge or another possibility is that they floated on reed mats, leaving no trace.
I love the cheek they have of using the ‘missing fossils yet to be found’ explanation that they hear when debating evolution. Just like little kids will retort “Your mother is one too!”, when they didn’t understand the word.
The trick is to call them out every time they falsely claim science and logic are on their side.
Clearly none of you have kids. Otherwise, you would know that its a good day when you can tinkle without the little ones making their presence felt.

Sorry, but this is fallacious reasoning and a poor reason to perform medically unnecessary surgery on a child. If the child has a long nose and the father a short one would you subject him to rhinoplasty? If the father has tattoos, should the child be tattoed to match?
Can you document an instance from the literature where lack of circumcision has psychologically traumatized a youngster in this manner?
I can tell you that I felt psychologically traumatized as a youngster when I realized what had been done to me as a baby.
leestein, I fail to see why you would feel traumatized. As I’ve said, my own son is cut and it didn’t seem to bother him any. Millions of dudes are walking around with an aerodynamic and maintenance free TOOL without complaint.
I’m not trying to tell you how to feel but if this is your biggest psychological scar, you’re in pretty good shape.
it would be nice to see a chart that shows where christian and pagan beliefs overlap.i think many people would be suprised.emperor constantine
seems to have had the last laugh.i doubt if the msm would show it can’t alienate the customer base.

“it would be nice to see a chart that shows where christian and pagan beliefs overlap.”
What a good idea. Maybe NYTimes would publish it as an OpArt piece if we could stir some associated controversy.
tmarkville:
What, you don’t lock the bathroom door when you whiz?
KA
It’s quite common practice to have the rugrats follow you into the bathroom once they start crawling. They tend to go thru a period of not wanting to be separated from you at all at that time too, so closing the door on them is a huge affront to them.
Letting them see what’s happening and explaining it to them is a good precursor to potty training later on.
Yep, once you have kids, you never go to the john alone, till your youngest is about 4.
karen:
I stand corrected, m’dear.

A child has the right to an intact body. Sometimes, in the case of birth defects or disease this can’t be helped. But a foreskin is not a birth defect. A healthy functioning part of my body was surgically removed for no good reason when I was an infant and had no say in the matter. I’m not saying this is my biggest psychological scar, but I think I’m justified in being pissed off about it.
The fact that it’s been done to millions of babies every year for the past century doesn’t make it right, and neither does the fact that it’s possible to function without it.
Would you amputate the little toes from babies because they would still be able to walk fine without them? Of course not.
Ten years ago, a law was passed making it illegal to do this to little girls in the US. Why shouldn’t little boys have equal protection under the law? Or do you think the Female Genital Mutilation Act should be repealed because it’s cleaner and looks more “aerodynamic?”
It bothers me that they are performing elective surgery without consent.
I have also talked to men that say they don’t wash their penis for religious reasons, because washing would require touching. That means the only time their penis gets “washed” is during sex. Doesn’t it bother the religious women that the man is never washing his penis? I guess circumcision makes that possible but, it hardly seems desirable to me.
Off topic, I didn’t know god was broke:

I can just hear god laughing at this guy and saying, “Heh, heh, What’s in YER wallet!?”
rna,
You’re right. Not only is circumcision usually forced upon guys who are too young to know what a penis is, but often those victims are brainwashed into believing that they do not have the freedom to even touch parts of THEIR OWN BODIES.
Easy way to prove the religion wrong: touch the penis, and see what happens.
