Will religion lose credibility over Gay Love?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20061120/cm_usatoday/whenreligionlosesitscredibilityHere’s a great article by a Baptist Minister that really points well to the looming conflict between science and Christianity on homosexuality. What if science proves Christianity wrong — again? He takes a pompous stance — Christianity isn’t the ONLY religion, and he doesn’t go into the whole “how much more have we been wrong in the past” thing, but he does hit a few nails on their heads. Good reading. My opinion: The minister has nothing to worry about. His job is safe. If science proves homosexuality is (for example) totally genetic, it will only be the latest time they were proven wrong, and far from the last. Thanks Zac.

    Karen,

I would love to hear your sons ideas on this!!

I can certianly imagine how in todays society to suggest that you could have any arousal at the idea of being with someone else would automatically label you. What I would love to hear is his own view of himself.

After all that is the big difference I was talking about when alex tried to compare this discussion with the God delusion problem. This is very different. Sexuality is a very personal thing about your existence not the existence of another.

I hope your son can share!

How? By finding out it’s genetic?

What will change is the view of abortion from the Gay view. Just imagine women having abortions because their baby carries a “gay” gene…the ProLife crowd would swell with new members…

    Speaking of which…

Amazing pictures of animals in the womb…

So what if people started harvesting baby elephants for commercial consumption? Hmmmm…so much for the “Prochoice” crowd…

  3. JP says:

thaddeus — I took your question on same-sex marriage as valid; even plenty of gay folks have speculated on whether the struggle is just one of terms, with “domestic partnership” being good enough.

On the bi thread, I happen to know a guy who loves having sex with his wife, and fluctuates on the amount of sex he likes having with men on the side. The only studies I’ve seen (sorry – I can’t cite them) suggest that bisexuality has a higher occurrence among teens and young adults, and that older people tend to gravitate to one sex or the other. The bi guy I know is an older person, however, so there are always exceptions.

I wouldn’t question a person’s identification as bisexual, in part because it pisses me off when bisexuals say stupid things like “basically, all people are bi.” As with religion, my position with a bisexual person would be “claim it for yourself, but don’t claim it for me.” Unfortunately, I’ve also encountered homophobia from people who identify as bi. The difference between bisexuality and a God claim, of course, is that the former can be proven.

When will groups of people that prey on others learn to respect other people of a different lifestyle from theirs?http://www.petitiononline.com/zmp6369q/

    JP,
    I agree, I agree ;)

  6. mxracer652 says:

phreedm, get some god damned education. There isn’t a “gene for X”, that’s a pop culture myth.

And those aren’t pictures, they’re artists renderings, you obviously have never seen a mammal give birth before.

    You’re so gullible.

whatever our political masters decide the law will be,i hope all of us will have love in our lives.to give and receive love is to live.i smile ever time i recall the writing of lucretius on how love blinds a man.i have been a blind fool more than once but no regrets have i.

  8. reason says:

was sodomy a sin in roman or persian religions how about religions of celts, slavs, germans, chinese.our debate is carried out in the context of the religions of semite peoples but most of us are not of semitic descent.

  9. JP says:

reason — “Sodomy” is by definition a “sin,” because God destroyed the inhabitants of Sodom for their wicked ways.

As a gay man and an atheist, I reject the terms “sodomy” and “sin” because I’m free to reject bigoted Judeo-Christian myths.

I understand your point, though, that different cultures have different sexual mores. Some cultures, too, will accept a certain sexual practice but will pigeon-hole a person for engaging in it. One-night stands are common in the USA, but only s1uts have one-night stands — that sort of thing.

  10. reason says:

thank you jp for understanding.i am not gay but i am atheist.i want to be for wisdom and justice but sometimes my head is in one direction
    and my heart another.

  11. Triple777 says:

Everyone who don’t repent and stop being gay is going to hell.

  12. thaddeus says:

    triple777,

Wow, your post was so enlightening, your argument tight and well crafted. You illuminated your points well with example and fact and then brought it all to such a convincing climax that I am totally persuaded… although I am not Gay I am now goiing to convert back to Christianity.

You really should write a book. Your ability to share your ideas in such a convincing way is truely superhuman… of course that is probably due to your direct line to the almighty himself.

I am sure you have convinced all of the atheist and gays here. Oh, thats right I am sure that was not your intent… what was your intent actually? What did you think would be the result of your reasoned one liner? Or was it just an opportunity to strike out? Well, no matter you have represented your bretheren well. Rest easy tonight brother I am sure your god is pleased!

    thaddeus, thaddeus, thaddeus,

Sarcasm? From you! Welcome to the dark side. Good work by the way.

  14. Monika says:

    Thaddeus – love the sarcasm!

    ♥♥♥♥

  15. thaddeus says:

    remy,

lol, yes, well, you have to admit triple777 really asked for it and who am I to deny him his request ;)

Kinda did feel good, but I must resist :)

  16. reluctantatheist says:

    Triple777:
What, are you 12 or something?
Nice monicker. Who appointed you representative of the trinity, BTW?
Say hey to Vishnu for me (oops! Wrong triune! Sorry!)

  17. sunbeamatheist says:

Thank you Thaddeus. Maybe triple 7 is one of those evangelists, maybe not? Good point Krystalline Apostate, “12″ I like that. That triple 7, “telling us to repent,” always ordering someone to do something. Triple 7 reminds me of the trainer that hits those poor elephants with a stick in the circus. Maybe triple 7 will keep reading our comments and learn something positive for once, who knows triple 7 just might become an Atheist once triple 7 breaks the chains of religion. Life is good, very good and I was born right the first time. I’m happy being an Atheist, can’t take that away from me!

  18. thaddeus says:

    Sunbeam,

    I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE your line…

“I was born right the first time”

… I will have to make that part of my repertoire and chalk it up as an all time favorite. Perfect, hilariously perfect!

and KA… I am goiing to guess the “something” rather than the 12… I have spoken to some very reasonable 12 year olds ;)

  19. reluctantatheist says:

    sunbeamatheist:
Triple777 (it’s actually a redundancy) IS a direct reference to the trinity.
So it’s the trinity times 3? Interesting.

  20. Jesin says:

The main argument should IMHO not be that homosexuality is actually natural, but that if it is unnatural, that may not be a bad thing. Click here for more.

  22. sunbeamatheist says:

    Thaddeus,

Thank you for your super nice compliments and your comments, you have helped make my whole day turn out a lot better and that much brighter. Great work on that Triple 777. Triple 777 is very fearful of something.

    Krystalline Apostate,

I love your style of writing, your sense of balance are very unique and your presentation is excellent, and I admire your comments too.
True that Triple 777, “Trinity times 3″, you’re right, that is interesting.

Excellent blogspot by the way that you have, the stripping nun on the writing pen is really hilarious. Recurring health problems prevented me from returning this week. Hey, a week is good, glad I could help with the compliments, you deserve them. Keep up the good work, we can learn a lot from your site. After this holiday x-mas, season is over, then I can relax.
