count me in on this. as an atheist and a man of science i view some of science fiction as future reality.

and i enjoy the thought provoking aspects of science fiction.

i would think that the atheist force would be strong among science fiction fans.

I used to read a lot of science fiction, even the old pulp mags. It seemed to go along with my interest in all things scientific. Most of my reading now is in "reality" science...trying to keep up with new developments.

I started reading science fiction at a very young age and have been an enthusiast ever since.
Don't know that I'd ever go to a convention, though.

Dave
As for sponsoring a table, what does it involve?

Glad to hear the atheist info was snapped up at this convention. Always glad to hear of interest in atheism.

Interestingly (at least I think so), the wife was reading on Scientology this evening (not sure why). She exclaimed after a while, "This is just not religion, it's science ficton!"

To which I responded, "How does one tell the difference?"

Is religion just a sub-genre of Sci-Fi?

I'm a hardcore science fiction junkie. In fact, every atheist I personally know is rather fond of the genre.

Sure, I like Sci-Fi. I especially like the older stuff. It's fun to look back and see what past generations imagined the future would be like.

I enjoy some scifi, but my favorite is Dr. Who, which sparked my interest in physics and in theories on time travel. I'm more into actual science now, but I can certainly see a connection between scifi and Atheism, and I think a scifi convention would be a great place for us to have a booth.

I wonder if an Atheistic booth would do well at the scifi/comic book/gaming convention in Georgia, DragonCon? It's scifi people and gamers attending, but it's still in the Bible belt?
a childhood friend and i grew up with star trek reruns -- to this day i refer to my mobile as my communicator. i'm still a sf fan and am keenly interested in science. my friend and i have grown apart because of geography. the last time i saw her, about 5 years ago, she had become very religious, almost fundamentally so, and was bringing up her kids accordingly.

other sf fans i know have been drawn to new age ideas which i suspect might be a very common occurance.

there must be a lot of atheists among sf fans.. and a stand would be useful to reinforce their assertiveness.
