I can't speak for the religious

Then why did he write this article?

Over 90% of respondents said ?Yes.? In the same poll, only 49% claimed they would support an atheist for president. While Jews can take heart in these numbers, atheists and humanists can only shake their heads in astonishment.

Gleeson just doesn't get it. As I've said many times, it's more about perception then what one believes.

All anyone hears about atheists are court challenges to what most Americans hold dear. One should try to educate instead.

In some respects, science has far surpassed religion in delivering awe. How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, ?This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed??

Obviously Gleeson is showing is ignorance about the bible...he should of listened to his own opening statement...

1 Corinthians 2:9
Hebrews 11:3
Isaiah 40:26

And on and on and on...

There is indeed plenty of awesome stuff to be experienced in this world---like the amazing semi-final US Open Tennis match between Roger Federer and James Blake. Except for the second set, when James was apparently having an out-of-body experience, it was top-notch tennis, and a thrill to watch. BTW, Federer won in 4 sets.

More fun than watching the Steelers beat the Dolphins 28-14 in the opening game of the football season. Definitely some kinks to work out of the system on Heinz Field-had me a little nervous there for a few minutes, fellas!

Spiritual Atheism? Well, I put on my long sleeved Steeler shirt(even tho it's too damn hot for it yet) and called my two older kids to make sure they were suitably coordinated for the watching of the blessed event. Couldn't find my "Terrible Towel" --that made me edgy. On the first score, I callled both kids and yelled WHOOO-hooooo! into their phones, and hung up. I talked to the TV all through the game. Scared my cats, I did.
Maybe atheism isn't spiritual, or a religion...but Steeler football fever is!

Phreedm said:

Everytime there is a court challenge in this country, atheists educate people. You're taught a little something called the Separation of Church and State. But due to your unbelievable selfishness and willfull ignorance, you never get a passing grade.

It's a shame people like yourself "hold dear" things like prozelytizing and bigotry, instead of things like the Constitution. So very sad and unAmerican.

Great article.

If the sun were a grain of sand, the stars in our galaxy would fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool. If our galaxy were a grain of sand, the galaxies would fill several olympic-sized swimming pools.

Ooohhh Ahhh a flaming bush... wow!
Water into wine... give me a break.
Interesting article.

I too find nature awe-inspiring, to the point of tears sometimes. Music, literature, great movies and good food are also reasons to rejoice. Hell, I've had some really profound thoughts and overwhelming feelings while blissed out on drugs!

But I don't think is necessarily "atheist" spirituality. I personally don't assign god any credit for my feelings of awe or love or pleasure, but that's because I know it's coming from myself and my internal emotional, physical and intellectual reaction to the stars, music, film, drugs or pizza.

"Spirituality" to me is not an intellectual exercise (although sometimes an emotion can coincide with an intellectual insight to create a particulary wonderful epiphany!) "Spirituality" to me is more about feeling (italicize that word) so it is quite separate from my atheism.

To be clear though--I never would ascribe any feelings of awe or joy or "rapture" to a supernatural being.

The fact that we used to worship thunerstorms and the rising of the sun in the morning there is little wonder that we worship a God. Nature is a truly amazing thing. The fact that we don't yet understand everything just means we don't understand yet. It certainly doesn't mean a lonely ectoplasmic entity conjured it up.

Off topic a little. Can anyone recommend a book or a site I can go to where there are explanations of religious precepts that an athiest can use when "debating" the religious. Thanks.

Yeah, the Universe is pretty kick-a$$.

Phreedm Said:

Obviously Gleeson is showing is ignorance about the bible...he should of listened to his own opening statement...

1 Corinthians 2:9
Hebrews 11:3
Isaiah 40:26

Well... I have read all of those excerpts. Actually I've read almost the whole bible and I didnt feel any sense of Awe or inspiration. I just found it depressing. Maybe you find it inspiring and all that, and thats fine, But don't say he is showing ignorance about the bible... that is a very... ugh... whats the word... Ignorant thing to say. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of beautiful things in the bible, my favorite:

5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

truly full of awe, ow awe-full

on a different note, A lady friend of mine who is christian said athiests should say they're spiritual because they don't believe in spirts. Any ideas on how to talk about that with her?

Everytime there is a court challenge in this country, atheists educate people.

Interesting way to choose to educate. I'm wondering if you'd feel the same it the table was turned? Say when Newdow looses?

It's a shame people like yourself "hold dear" things like prozelytizing and bigotry, instead of things like the Constitution.

"people like yourself"...?

And you're calling me a bigot...?
