The good side of Christianity

Thanks Chaos,http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/disowning-conservative-politics-is/20060729195809990004?ncid=NWS00010000000001If all preachers were like this, how much better would our country and world be?

Has ANYONE taken the time to listen to his sermons? Somehow I kind of doubt it…that would take responsibility…it’s much easier to approach life through emotions rather then fact…

Said the raven to the crow…

And RA…please…I’ll post the names of a dozen preachers who preach America IS a Christian nation…

“If a million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.”
    - Anatole France.
Wait, IS an xtian nation as in demographically, or IS a nation as in founded? I assume the latter correctly?

    Phreedy,

I’m not sure if any of us could ever explain this to you…..

I appreciate this man’s willingness to put this out on the table in front of his entire congregation. While it seems that everyone likes to spout off about this xian nation of ours, it’s refreshing to hear of a preacher who does not believe that anyone who doesn’t think like him is lower than dirt. Even more refreshing that he seems to believe that the government shouldn’t dictate religion!

Many of us have little use for preachers – made worse by the Robertsons, Falwells, and Phelps’ that the media like to provide platforms for. It’s kinda nice to think about the possibility that there are more preachers like Rev. Boyd out there.

Isn’t it always the loud, squeaky wheel that gets the oil? That’s how I think of idiots like Robertson, Falwell, and thier ilk. Those who shout loudest many times have the least to say.

This man, Rev. Boyd, put it out there in front of his followers without the publicity. Please note that he preached several sermons BEFORE the last presidential election, yet we are just hearing of it now. Perhaps if some religious types had heard this before the election, it would have given them pause in their “one-trick” voting.

While I may or may not agree with him, he’s earned the beginnings of respect from me. I’d have to look much further to confirm that.

It’s also amazing that from 5 or 6 posts, you interpret that we think he’s “the greatest thing since sliced bread.” Shoot, you are reading an awful lot into a few quotes from others stating that it was a good article, and that we agree with his statements IN SAID ARTICLE.

I’m not in the habit of reading preachers sermons….this one article, though appreciated, won’t change that!

    Nicely said, Bones.

    ****a bit off-topic*******

How do you ask a preacher to sign a “non-compete” clause?

This is the kindo if shit that makes the “news” here. Damn, how I hate living in Tennessee.

    Bones
If this guy’s “morality” was in question, and the elders wanted to put a gag order on him by having him sign a non-compete clause AND say he left the church willingly…it sounds like they’re afraid too many folks would follow him somewhere else—and his “morality” just doesn’t fit with theirs.

  7. avatar Bones says:

I guess I was relating it more to the non-compete I signed, which (although not enforceable) states that I can’t go work for a client of ours within a certain time frame.

Although I read in the article what the non-compete entailed, I had this vision of the pastor brushing up on his Islam or Jewish laws in preparation for his year of exile.

  8. avatar JP says:

It sounds like Pastor Boyd is reponding to the bad joke Christianity has become in this nation. Fighter planes over crosses as a church image? It’s getting hard to tell American Fundamentalism apart from a Comedy Central jab against it.

Maybe stepping up the anti-Christian ridicule will shame a few more socio-religious wannabes into rethinking their alliances with flag-draped morons.

    pre-apologies to godless77 for this:

give it up phreedm. you have the objectivity and reasoning power of a dog biscuit.

Tsk, tsk, Flan. That’s not very *christian* of you. LOL!!!
Obviouly, I really don’t care. As a matter of fact, I love the dog biscuit reference. How very apropos!
So, biscuit boy phreddy, do you think we’re all going to convert just because this guy did one thing that was rational? We’re merely happy that yes, there is one nutjob out there that wa able to clear the cobwebs out of his head long enough to recognize the FACT that the xian right is acting illegally and immorally when it is pushing it’s political agenda.
Oh and as for your list of preachers who contradict the Boyd guy? To me, they’re all criminals and should serve time.
But don’t believe me that the xian right is acting in an illegal fashion. Go read up on the guy who worte the law: Thomas Jefferson.
America is NOT a Chritian Nation, but a nation whose majority is Christian. However, Jefferson knew that the theocrats would use that against the minority given the chance. therefore, we have a seperation of church and state. Not just to protect religion from government, but to protect government from religion.
Try reality phreed biscuit. You’ll get along much better, and the docs may take you off the meds!

  10. avatar Panda24 says:

Xtians want to rule our country?First, they have to get rid of the constitution for several reasons. The biggest two being separation of church and state and the right for citizens to overthrow the government in the event it becomes too powerful.

I agree with Boyd’s staements that religion is becoming too involved in politics and that the “christian label” shouldn’t be slapped on everything everywhere.

However, in the end, Boyd is still xtian, still holds intolerant beliefs, and still preaches the fairytale.

    Phreed:

No one’s holding the man on a pedestal. Just because you can list a few preachers who claim America is a xtian nation doesn’t mean that this is a xtian nation.

Along the lines of RA’s quote:

“It is better to appear foolish than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
**I’d like to give credit where credit is due for this quote, but I don’t know who said it…I just like it. If anyone knows who said it, please share the info.**

    RA,
I loved the C.S. Lewis comment. You don’t hear that coming out of the jeebus freak camp!
    I wonder why????
Well, not really. It’s pretty damn obvious that they don’t want to let this get out.
    Cherrypicking!

Oh, didn’t you hear? It’s allegorically unsound, scripturally speaking.
    Hehehehe.

  13. avatar godless77 says:

Allegorically? Oh well in that case he never said it!
    BWA-HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  14. avatar atomictesting says:

    Jonboy,

To accept a book written by a bunch of Bronze Age goat herders as being
the answer to every aspect of their lives

Don’t forget that they were Bronze Age cow herders hopped up on psilocybe msuhrooms.

I can totally see how Moses might have seen a burning bush that he would think was a deity talking to him. That’s one hell of a trip.

  15. avatar atomictesting says:

    Panda24,

No one’s holding the man on a pedestal. Just because you can list a few preachers who claim America is a xtian nation doesn’t mean that this is a xtian nation.

Phreddy believes everything he hears from a “man of the cloth.” Unless there are two such men and they say different things. Then he goes with whichever is the more popular idea. He’s a walking, talking, ad populum consuming, fire breathing, end-of-the-world-spouting believer. Or, in a word, a dupe.

So, in summary, yes because he can list a few people that say the same thing he thinks then it must be right. Case closed, no further research necessary.

  16. avatar Panda24 says:

Thanks RA for the author of the quote.

Thanks atomic for the rundown on phreed…I see he hasn’t denied that yet.

    Spanders you’re a liar,you don’t have Dutch relatives,because that word doesn’t exist in Dutch and i should
    know ’cause i am Dutch.
You probably found it in Oxford Dix (i did)
and thought it would make you look smart and intelligent, well it doesn’t,
and you should know (especially as an American) that while supporting a good cause under false claims only hurts that one goal.

  18. avatar Ranim says:

So alexatheist joins in on the debate….hmmmm.
“they talk like they have a mouth full of pebbles”
I’m Dutch and find that offensive,
but then again you’re probably just as sad as that other individual spanders who wants to vent their opinion without actually knowing what they’re talking about,it saddens me because this is about something good.

It’s probably better with the Germans,Spanish,Italians or wait
    no the FRENCH……………

    From http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=poppycock

1865, probably from Du. dialect pappekak, from M.Du. pappe “soft dung” (see pap) + kak “dung,” from L. cacare “to excrete.”

Hmmm who to go with here… a Dick or a Dictionary?
