I'm sure this is incredibly common among atheists, but upon telling a close friend of mine (early in our relationship), who happened to be Mormon, that I was an atheist, he asked me..."So, how do you know right from wrong?".

I've always thought that had to be the stupidest question...but, maybe not?

I have also heard questions like...

?So you worship the devil??

?What?s an atheist?? (one of the good questions)

?Are you gay?? (don?t ask, I have no idea how they arrived at this question)

?Is that a Christian religion??

When I told a guy at work, he said there was no such thing as Atheists. Apparently, if I don't believe in God, I'm still acknowledging there is a God to not believe in. Of course, I asked him if he believed in Unicorns. He immediately saw the fault of his logic.
There is a guy I work with who actually mocked me.

"How can you be so stupid?"

He said that he knows god exists "because he spoke to (him) once" and that he "feels sorry" for me and my kids.

He then went on to say that he was Agnostic. When I gave him a puzzled look he mocked, "Look it up!"

I told him I knew EXACTLY what it means and that he obviously didn't. Again he says, "Just look it up".

Like they say, you can't argue with stupid.

I love when I get the old ?there are no absolutes, so therefore no one can be an Atheist? line. Usually, what I hear is that is because of those damn liberal universities I went too. I laugh and tell them ?if that was the case wouldn?t I also lean liberal politically as well? they can never answer that. Most of time when people find out, I end up receiving tons of religious e-mails from them. Once someone (I think my Brother) had a bible mailed to my house. I now keep it in the powder room as toilet reading. The worst was telling my wife. Regardless of the fact that she can?t stand religion, still believes in God (just can?t get over that supposed spiritual moment at Christian camp when she was 11). She really believed that since I said I was an Atheist I was going to go out and molest children and murder people. Fortunately, she doesn?t feel that way now, but it was hard for awhile. Off topic, but does anyone have any suggestion on how to handle a 1 parent wants their child Christened and the other doesn?t situation.
