I do feel that if we want religion to stay out of Government, then Government needs to stay out of religion. Unfortunately, taxation can be used (and is often, how do you think lobbyist make a living) as a form of Government control. Therefore, I feel taxing them would be contradictory to the 1st amendment.

Corporations are looked on as distinct entities, and are taxed as such. I don't see how churches are any different. They have certainly made themselves into a big business, and should be treated as such.

Churches, pastors, priests, and archbishops are taking a more active role in shaping the rules of our government. They can and do turn everything into a religious fight.(why else would we even be discussing what marriage should be?).

This seems to me to be REPRESENTATION WITHOUT TAXATION.

It's starting to remind me of the puritans rules that Massachusetts citizens had to follow in 1800. How long until we get to that point?

Can you imagine the amount of money NJ could collect, just from the catholic church(the richest company in the world, microsoft be damned)?

If religious institutions start talking politics from the palpate then their tax exempt status should be revoke. If they do not, then I still feel that taxation can be considered Government interference in religion. While corporations are distinct entities, unlike religion, the constitution offers them no protection from Government controls.

I might be mistaken, but wouldn't NJ be losing billions in tax revenue by closing Casin*os and beaches.

scobysnx,

yes, but the reason it was done was so the governor could force the legislature to pass his agenda'd budget, so he's "punishing" the state because the people don't like what he's doing.

welcome to modern american politics.
