Little by little, the Constitution is dying

The House passed a $513 billion defense authorization bill yesterday that includes language intended to allow chaplains to pray in the name of Jesus at public military ceremonies, undercutting new Air Force and Navy guidelines on religion.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/11/AR2006051102009.html?referrer=email&referrer=emailThanks JD…

its just to bad we cant get the goverment to go by it and then theres the people that want to erode it even more By prohibiting gay marriage umong other things.

It trully is sad the way the people that want to change the Constitution
dont even understand the first ammendment.

Every one here Knows it so I wont even repeat it.

Yes even those here that are of the xtian faith and would argue the facts know they are wrong about the first ammendment but wont admit it.

see yah as ra would say thats my five cents drop it in a slot machine.

oh wait I guess he wouldnt say it then I will.

That seriously pisses me off. They already bring religion into ceremonies that should NOT have religion involved. It’s bad enough as it is. This is the type of thing that makes me want to get out when my enlistment is up.

I think if they let the military run the military things would be a lot better. I hate it when civilians think they know what is best for the military when most of them have know idea what being in the military is actually like. Most people think it is like what they see in movies.

    Sorry, rant over. For now.

So I did a little research on this bill, it’s H.R. 5122 by the way. Under Title V, Subtitle J, Sec. 590 it allows chaplains to “have the prerogative to pray according to the dictates of the chaplain’s own conscience” which, to me, means he can pray anyway he wants, leaving the choice up to him. There’s nothing specific in the bill about him having to use Jesus so I don’t exactly know what the Washington Post story was talking about in that respect. What I don’t like about it is it takes away a certain “gag” on them and now does allow them to “pray to jesus” if they want to whereever they want to, even in public sessions. I don’t know how the military works so I’m not sure if they have prayers in sessions that are required attendance for all military personnel, this I would have a problem with since that would, in essense, be a public prayer to a specific religion.

On the bright side, I think that most of these people are going to be voted out of office this November so we’ll have a better congress in there for the next 2 years. Just in case you were curious, here is the roll call for this vote.

    http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll145.xml

Take note of the ones that voted “ayes” so that you know who you might want to vote against in November.

  4. avatar says:

Hmmm…so now you want the government to tell a chaplin how to pray?

Exactly how is this eroding the constitution?

Sure sounds like a violation of the myth known as the Sep of Church and State to me. This bill clarifies a chaplin’s role and supports the First Amendment. The Air Force and Navy should not have “prohibited the free exercise” of an individuals religion.

Just out of curiosity. What role does a chaplin play in the life of a non-believer serving in the military?

    A bit off topic…

This guy sure isn’t going to help your cause…

    One more off topic…

Here’s another example of why poll numbers are in the basement for atheists…

The ten foot steel cross is painted white, and bears the name of deceased Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Joseph Brumett, who died on duty in 1992 while directing traffic on I-15. The sign also carries the beehive symbol of the Utah Highway Patrol. It sits on state land in front of the Murray field office of the Highway Patrol. And Ellen Johnson wants it taken down.

I can hear it at Utah dinner tables. Who elected Ellen Johnson to office? Isn’t she from New Jersey? What business is it of hers to come to Utah to tell us how to live? How much is this law suit going to cost Utah?

And on, and on, and on…

It’s a different culture in Utah compared to the liberal strong hold known as New Jersy. This is going to do nothing to improve atheists causes. Is Ellen elected to office by membership at large?

Some good news from the world of politics-that porcine little creep, Karl Rove, who masterminded the demonisation of homosexuals in order to get out voters for Bush has been indicted in connection to the Valerie Plame leak and for lying to investigators. I don’t believe in karma but this son of a bitch is getting what he deserves. I hope his fat porky white arse gets sent to prison for a long time. Oh, the deliciously satisfying Schadenfreude I’m expereiencing right now!!!

It’s a defence authorization bill, eh?
    Well, c’mon people!
What BETTER defence can we have than getting all the chaplains to call upon JESUS to protect and defend us?
Let’s stop sending Lacy and all the other valiant service people into harm’s way. Just ask JESUS to cover our asses, and it will be done. He don’t need no stinkin’ sub-standard flak-jacket; He don’t need no tanks or bullets. He is INVINCIBLE! (uh, just keep him away from nails and wood).
Just ask JESUS to cover our asses, and it will be done…
Because we are the UNITED THEOCRACIES of AMERICA, the new self-appointed chosen people!

God Bless America! I forget, in WHICH book of the Bible does it say that? The Book of Dominion?

    Bleah.

Im retired US Army…..It has been my experience of 21 years that Superstitious Rituals begin and end Military Ceremonies. These rituals intertwine a lot of the military language. Language used for indoctrination, causes, justifications as well as ceremonies. I am definitely for protecting these borders….I just cannot do it in the name of the pie in the sky.

    Karen Rules!!!

Yes he posts here (not as frequently as he used to, thank Ramen!).
He sees himself as a Holy Warrior, come to do verbal battle w/the heathens, mounted on his imaginary steed. A fisher of men who thus far has come up w/an empty net.

RA…lol…I know. I’ve seen his posts, I was being facetious. I’ve actually stopped reading his rants because they are useless to me. When I see his name I just bypass the post and move on to the next one. No reason to bother with it. :)

Like I always say, follow the money…

The city already has paid him $100,000, a judge has ordered the city to pay him an additional $280,000, and McElroy intends to bill the city for a large sum ? ?well into the six figures? ? on top of that.

And right or wrong the response from the Majority of Americans could of been predicted.

I post this in repsonse to low poll numbers for non-believers. Perhaps it comes down to which way one wants to approach their problems. Either through the courst or education.
    Perception is everything…

Thanks for the answer. It’s nice to see at least one poster that can simply respond without getting their BVD’s in a wad.

Low poll numbers do not invalidate a valid position. Stupid people get polled.

    Popularity does not predict accuracy.

An observation from growing up as a fundamentalist preacher’s son: fundamentalists need to create converts to help them validate their own faith. It seems to help remove some of their own doubt if they can actually persuade someone else to believe like they do.

I am a proud member of the minority in this country: free-thinking, rationalists with a naturalistic world view. Not a cockroach (hordes of them; high poll numbers) but rather a dolphin (highly intelligent; not afraid to swim against the polluted flow.)

The travesty mentioned in the article is the right-wing response to the “persecuted” Navy chaplain who staged an illegal protest in uniform in front of the White House with Roy Moore, Rob Schenck, and Rick Scarborough (NOT the TV nitwit, the other one). He vainly attempts to defend his violation of military law and orders here: http://forums.military.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/3890090820001/m/6440010860001/p/1
