udoman, people who take the bible word for word are called fundamentalists. I, for one, am not one of them. The Bible is not to be taking literlly word for word, it is a guideline in how to live our life and, believe it or not, you are following it.

I don’t believe in God’S either, but I do belive in God. What other God’s are there?

If you believe in Elohim/Yaweh/Jesus then you believe in a class of supernatural entity know as gods.

incodently if you also swallow the trinitymindfuck ™ then in a sense you also believe in three gods.

    Yawn.

It is interesting to me that so many of the evangelicals who come here will trump up an atheist-to-christian conversion story while ignoring the fact that many of us started as believers ourselves. What about our de-conversions? Do they count for anything? What about the many prominent atheists/skeptics/humanists who started out as fundamentalists, some even earning several doctorates in theology?

Really, what a person used to think does not have much bearing on the actual truth.

Quoting that capricious, unreiable conglomeration of anonymously authored books full of vile atrocities, contradictions and absudities known as the bible is pretty pointless to non-believers.

It has about the same effect as quoting Harry Potter.

You know what karen, that is an excellent question. A fucking ‘clinker’ as I like to say. Unfortunately thats where the likes and me and you hit a dead end, because no-one can awnswer that. The only thing I can fall back on with a question like that is that is my faith. But by saying there is no God, you are saying there is no creator. You are saying that there is no beginning. How can YOU explain how we began? What do you believe?

  17. mryder66 says:

Comment from: AnswerMeThis: You are saying that there is no beginning. How can YOU explain how we began? What do you believe?

Not wishing to speak for Karen, I wish to make a comment: All an atheist is saying is that they do not hold a belief in gods.

Some might say there is no begining, some may say there is, and others may say they don’t know.

This is largely irrelevant to being an atheist.

  18. AnswerMeThis says:

By the way HeatheNZ, being told that we are all an accident, that they way we got here is just a coincidence. Telling me that everyone I love, my friends, and family. The music I listen to, the things I enjoy, the things I smell, taste, touch, all of that is an accident? I find that a much, much bigger insult.

By the way folks, I gotta go. Football match…I’ll be on some other time to talk to you. Cya wen i do.

    What do I believe?
For starters, I believe in one less god than you do.
What do you mean by how “we” began? Man?
    Evolution.
    Evolution?
    Abiogenesis.
    Matter?
    I dunno.
But not anything supernatural. Something that hasn’t been discovered or explained-yet-but not in the hands of any god(s).

  21. mryder66 says:

    Karen,

Thanks for the virtual high five. In truth it was pretty obvious that amt would just dismiss the list out of hand ….

I guess that’s an example of throwing the baby out with the bath water

  22. mryder66 says:

    Karen,

Interestingly AMT included in his/her dismissal a denial of the Holy Spirit.

This is of course the only unforgivable sin in xianity.

    ooops!

Do you think that means that AMT is destined to enternal damnation?

Kind of a steep price to pay for not reading a big list of gods carefully.

  23. karen says:

    HZ
I confess, I didn’t read the entire list either, and missed the inclusion of the xian gods! But then, I’m not claiming any of them as real.

Interestingly AMT included in his/her dismissal a denial of the Holy Spirit.

ooops indeedy! I think eternal damnation is in AMT’s future. Denial of the holy spirit by disregard and through laziness. Terrible! Surely a god as vengeful and loatheome as the one AMT was quoting would not accept a plea of a harmless mistake. Ouch.

  24. recoveringcathoholic says:

    All,

As I am rather new here (and my apologies for needing to ask) I’d like to know if “answermethis” is typical of believers who hang around atheist sites hoping to “convince” us that we are but blind fools waiting to be led out of the darkness.

In any event, what a hoot! :) :):)
I almost can’t believe he/sh/it is for real.

  25. imaskeptic says:

does the author david mills ever post here?

  26. mryder66 says:

    recoveringpopaphile,

AMT is in my opinion fairly typical of a short-timer. I doubt we’ll see a return – but you never know.

They tend to come in and tell us very basic and simple things as if we’d never heard of them b4.

I think of them as well-intentioned but ill-equipped.

Sometimes however, if we are very lucky they’ll come up with something novel.

  27. Deadly Doomham says:

Haha, HeatheNZ hit the nail on the head. We get tons of noobie theists in here spouting off the same nonsense as if they’ve thought long and hard about it.

And then we get one or two who are considerate enough to stick around awhile before realizing the futility of their conversion attempts.

And then we get spanders :)

  28. sword_strike says:

What surprises me most about hit and run xians is that some try to convert us by quoting the bible, a book that we hold to be nothing more than (boring) fairy tales.

They do not realise how pointless it is.As Isaac Asimov puts it: “Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived”

Republicans ought to focus on their own family.

I ask you to consider joining the campaign for progressive legislation.

Join the campaign for progressive legislation http://www.boycott-republicans.com

Please do not buy products from these Republican contributors.

The Republican Party appears weak and vulnerable at the cash registers of the companies that give money to the Republican Party.

I have seen that people do not want to call companies and tell them why they boycott companies and ask for a progressive agenda, so then just avoid buying from these companies and spread the word. I will tell the Speaker of the House and the Senate majority leader and the CEOs of these companies listed below that their profits will silently lessen until an agenda listed below gets acceded to by the Republican Party in a press conference and then passed by congress and signed by the pResident. So just do this and I will do the rest of the work for you. You have no petitions to sign, no phone calls to make, just stop buying products from these Republican contributors and to tell others as well to stop. Thank you.

Dell Computers, Walmart, Wendy’s, Outback Steak House, Dominos Pizza, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Eckerd, CVS and Walgreens, Curves for women health clubs, General Electric and Exxon/Mobil.

    A progressive agenda for America.

I demand that the Republican Party hold a press conference and accede to these demands. Until such a press conference happens and the legislation and/or actions gets passed I will boycott products from Republican contributors Walmart, Wendy’s, Outback Steak House, Dominos Pizza, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Eckerd, CVS and Walgreens, Curves for women health clubs, General Electric and Exxon/Mobil.

I demand that congress pass legislation ending the war in Iraq and withdraw the troops and arrange with the United Nations to replace US troops with UN troops to defend Iraq until The Iraqi army can defend Iraq.

I demand that the Republican party end their aggressive and hateful action to end a woman’s right to choose abortion or not.

I demand that the Republican party end their aggressive and hateful action to harrass immigrants to this country.

I demand that the Congress of the United states and the president of the United States enact a law to increase the minimum wage to TEN dollars an hour and also to extend unemployment benefits to a year or more for all people whose unemployment benefits expired after 6 months even though they still seek work.

I demand that the Congress of the United States to not privatize social security benefits in any form including taking a percentage of the social security tax and placing it in private accounts. People can already create their own pensions with money after taxes in the private sector.

I demand that the congress make all of a person’s earned income taxable for social security FICA tax purposes and remove the 88,000 dollar taxable income limit. This will make social security solvent for many years to come.

I demand the congress increase the payroll tax in order to make social security solvent as well.

I demand congress and the president enact a prescription drug benefit under Medicare Part B which covers 80 percent of medication cost, with no extra premium, no extra deductibles, no means test and no coverage gaps, and no penalties for signing up in a succeeding year.

I demand congress repeal the faulty Medicare law HR 1 / S 1 passed by congress in Nov 2003.

I demand congress enact single payer universal health insurance for every citizen as minimum coverage.

I demand that congress and the president enact universal vote by mail throughout the 50 states of the United States of America with paper ballots easy to fill out and difficult to change or invalidate by Republican Party officials. This will prevent Republicans from vote suppression by skin color and political party which happened electronically and in person in the 2000 and 2004 elections.

I demand that congress and the president enact that civil servants on every state payroll keep track of voter registrations and vote counting of mail in votes in each precinct and not companies such as Choicepoint. We need to take the Republican Party out of the business of keeping track of voter registration and counting votes.

I demand that congress and the president ban the secretary of state in each of the 50 states from engaging in politics especially acting as a campaign official for a presidential campaign.

I demand congress enact legislation protecting private pensions from corporations deliberately declaring bankruptcy or ending pensions outright.

I invite you to put your legislative demands in with this list.

  34. Dagny3 says:

Great post, Maximus. Just one problem for me, though: I work at Wendy’s :-) Otherwise, good idea. The old “hit ‘em where it hurts, in the wallet” strategy usually works.

Back when I was in high school and forced to attend church with my parents, the southern Baptist churches led a boycott against those “trashy, sinful” soap operas. They did this buy refusing to buy the products advertized during these shows. Cleaning products make up a large portion of that advertizing. I remember that they filled out and signed piles of postcards to be sent to the S.C. Johnson Wax company, saying they would no longer buy those products unless the company stopped supporting “filth” on TV. The company still advertizes during the soaps, but if you’ve noticed, now they tack “S.C. Johnson, a family company,” onto the end of each commercial. Just shows you the power that large-scale boycotting can have.
