The piece was narrated by reporter Lester Holt. Ms. Couric stated: “Perhaps you have heard the expression ‘There are no Atheists in foxholes,’ and the men who have occupied the oval office have also turned to a higher power…” The program included mention of Jon Meacham’s book “American Gospel” which discusses the religious faith of national leaders, and featured brief clips of President Bush invoking God. There was, however, no Atheist on the program to challenge the unsubstantiated and inaccurate claim (”There are no Atheists in foxholes”). Nor was mention made of the secular roots of our history, and the fact that our Constitution provides for the First Amendment separation of church and state. The “no Atheists in foxholes” cliche marginalizes and insults millions of Americans who profess “no religion” (American Religious Identification Survey), including those who are serving — or have served — with honor, patriotism and distinction in our nation’s armed forces. Hundreds of these men and women rallied in Washington, DC last Veterans Day for the first “Atheists in Foxholes” Parade and recognition rally ( http://www.atheistfoxholes.org). Imagine if a leading television network had repeated a similar slur against, say, blacks or gays or some other group! But Atheists continue to be “fair game” as long as we do not speak out to correct this unfortunate stereotype. * CONTACT NBC and the “Today Show” now and ask for a clarification and apology over the “no Atheists in foxholes” cliche! We urge you to send letters and e-mails, and phone call to NBC. Be polite and concise. Point out that many Americans who are Atheists, Freethinkers and humanists have answered the call and served our nation in times of war and peace! Politely ask that the network clarifies the inaccurate claim that “There are no Atheists in foxholes,” and point out that this statement is not supported by credible evidence. READ I HERE FIRST:
HAIRLESS AGREES WITH PHREEDM.
ONE TIME ONLY!
I do agree, phreedm…
except I don’t, really.
It’s merely a so-so “I hope you’ll retract that” sort of thing.
And if we’re heading into THAT territory, well,
behold the outpourings of Fall-down-the-Well and Pat Robot,
neither of which could speak the truth even if their lives depended on it.
Does The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith receive government funding for its adoption program? If so, simple solution:
Go back to relying on bingo and private donations, and then you can discriminate against whomever you want.
phreedm,
Thanks for the cred.
It seems to me that the church is not being told what to believe – but how to implement those beliefs as they affect people in the wider community that are not (or should not) be subject to the auspices of the church.
In other words, (to the cardinal) “Keep your homophobia within the bounds of your church”.
hairless I too actually agree with phreedm on this issue I am for the total separation of church and state keep your church out of the government and keep your government out of your church but unfortunately that would not work as well as wed like if the churches were allowed to govern them selves it could very well lead to chaos and violence spread by unreasonable hatred all because of the different interpretations of the bible so to defuse the situation we do have to have the government step in to every so often to keep the peace so to speak like heathenz said it looks like the city gov just wanted the church to keep there beliefs inside the church walls
and as far as the comment on tv I say fuck it I don’t watch the networks in fact if it wasn’t for a couple of shows no body would probably watch the networks and the fact of the matter is 89% of the population thinks the same way we need to change the way atheist are viewed in this country and especially in the Midwest and the Southeast
and david (not silverman) glad to see you are not being as rude as you were and not trying to hijack the thread the way you used to although you still did hijack it but in a beter behaved manor
Phuck-you Phreedumeey
What educati’n does you have, boy?
Don’t you know that the Jesuits murdered tens of thousands of Mexican infants by smashing their skulls (after baptizing them) to “save their eternal souls?”
As the Romans don’t permit practicing gays to take communion, they may not baptize and kill their adopted young.
The advantages of being on the outside include a good and solid rejection of infanticide.
What a lovely Christian practice. How did you avoid the head-smashing?
AGAIN,
HOW FAR HAVE YOU MADE IT IN YOUR EDUCATION? WHO TAUGHT YOU?
Inquiring atheists (at least this one) want to know.
Do you have any formal education at all, Phredummy?
TXatheist,
Actually, no. I looked and looked when you mentioned it, but none of the drawers have a book of mormon in them.
I did, however, leave one of my back issues of American Atheist in the desk drawer anyway.
well the owner of the hotel i work at makes shure we have plenty of bibles around (Hard core xtian)from the giddy ups I mean the gideons so Ive actually had to have handled the vile book and I get this weird rash on my hands its like some body put spikes though my hands it weird I cant figure it out
I’ll check if they have books of mormon in the hotels up here; wouldn’t put it past this city.
The separation of church and state is one of the most misconstrued documents period! Whether any of you like it or not it has nothing to do with the church being involved in the state but has to do with the exact opposite. That is the state not being involved in the church. That is one of the main reasons they left England and came to America. All religious groups by the original meaning of “Separation of Church and State” should have free speech within the state in places such as the public school.
gxv2280:
Whether YOU like it or not, it’s bidirectional, not uni-directional.
Free speech is most emphatically NOT freedom of religion, or it would be stipulated as such.
Stop trying to retrofit it to your own specifications.
It’s up to the parents to teach children religion, not the state.
What utter folderol.
