Does he deserve to die? Probably. Are we as a society qualified to make that determination objectively? Possibly. Do we know where to draw the line to mete out such punishment justly? Probably not.

Personally I'm against capital punishment because it is not (and I think cannot) be equitably applied, it's not reversable, and it is arguably ineffective as a deterrent.

I have always been pro-death penalty and feel it is not used nearly enough. Which really goes at odds with my liberal side. Does this guy deserve it, yes. Why should he sit there in prison, and find any joy --- any reason to laugh --- again.

I am of two minds on this.
I was reading somewhere (probably Ingersoll) that our justice system doesn't rehabilitate - it engages in retribution.
OTH, a mad dog is a danger to 1 & all.
And yet - to a hereafterian, it poses no deterrent whatsoever. It also creates a martyr, that others might emulate.
Rotting in prison is a better answer - for the memory of the masses is fleeting at best.
The would-be martyr would look to a fresher example, rather than 1 decades old, still alive.

i agree with reluctant....they don't care if they die or live, which makes capital punishment a minimal deterrant and hardly a punishment(the virgins await)...let him rot in a christian prison and he'll soon be forgotten....meanwhile 9 american troops were killed yesterday for no reason....war on terror? bullshit

I'm with Ang on this one-the death penalty isn't used enough. My tax payer money pays for these loser bastards to sit in jail for the rest of their lives. What about victim's rights? I know that if someone ever murdered a person I love I would give total support for the death penalty.
Fry the son of a bitch and set an example to other would be faith based murderers. We as a society have got to take a very hard stance on crime and I do believe that if the death penalty was more common it would be a very strong deterrent to commit heinous crimes.
Alex.
crime is rampant in states with the death penalty...it is not a deterrant...murders are usually srur of the moment, revenge or serial...the death penalty hasn't reduced them...it doesn't enter into one's thinking....let the families decide what to do with the bastards...if they want them hung,so be it.

reluctant said:

I was reading somewhere (probably Ingersoll) that our justice system doesn't rehabilitate - it engages in retribution.

I think that this is the absolute truth. That there is rehabilitation going on is what society tells themselves to justify locking up human beings. I am very close to someone who spent time in prison and there is no rehabilitation. It's a breeding ground for criminals.

That said, I don't think that putting this man to death is the answer. What will it accomplish? I was once upon a time very pro-death penalty, but I realized that it's just barbaric behavior. This is the United States of America. Surely we are able to come up with alternative forms of harsh punishment. What, we have "laws" against torture but we'll kill a citizen for a crime?

Killing this man will not bring anyone back, it will not make 9/11 go away. I would much rather see this guy locked up in a stone 6x6 room with a dirt floor, and only given bread and water for eternity. That would be punishment.

Scratch that... I guess that wouldn't apply to Moussaoui. Sorry...

Killers of Men

As a v0yeur we all like a thriller,
But our laws rest upon many a pillar,
So when conspirital acts,
Leave body-strewn tracts,
Should our justice invoke 'kill a killer'?
