Funny that you mentioned "...if this were Utah..." In Utah they DO have religious classes. It is taught in junior high and high school and is taught by the LDS church; it's called "seminary." The difference, however, is that the building it is held in is right next to the school property and, it is taught before school, like at 7 a.m. It does, however, count as an elective. Of course, it is funded by the LDS church.

It really is a bad sign
that news like this
fails to make me shake my European head.
I'm scared that I might have reached the point where I can no longer be surprised at insidious U.S. evangelical fanaticism.
Scared because it shows it to be just about par for the course.
And I do, actually, love the idea of The United States Of America.
It's just that, politically and religiously, it seems to be trying to
make a parody of its own promise.
Not to mention that, economically,
it is, oddly enough(?), again the Republicans who are charging headfirst into huge debts.

Basically,
lest there's a second civil war
(by the way, how is war ever civil?),
no news-item outta the U.S. will surprise me.

uh oh ... I live in GA. This is way too close to home.

Actually I think it might be a good thing (vain hope). Perhaps the students will actually read the dispicable tome in all its gory, rather than be content to spout the usual xian inanities.

It really depends on whether intent the curriculum is indoctrination or education.

Persoanlly I think it'sbe hard to teach a class on the bible without coming across some diffe=icult questions.
