When I was a "believer" I was tought to treat Athiests like pariahs. Education and exposure overcomes stereotypes and prejudice. We just have to keep fighting the good fight.

Dave-
Thought this might warrant a new thread

http://www.ur.umn.edu/FMPro?-db=releases&-lay=web&-format=umnnewsreleases/releasesdetail.html&ID=2816&-Find

Apparently we are the least trusted minority in the US accordng to a telephone survey on religion of 2000 people. We are also the group parents would least like to see their child marry...boo hoo!
This is an important finding because it shows how important it is, for us as individuals, to improve our image. This is the type of thing that effects all of us. As much as I find the 'Brights' movement distasteful, I do appreciate their mission to show naturalism in a better light. I would also like to drop this study as a nice compliment to the last one I posted on American attitudes.
Can any atheist here cite any specific examples where they were discriminated against? I'm very curious about that. Please share.

There's no substitute for being right. And, we atheist are right. Its also comforting to realize that we are all athiest, each and everyone of us. Everyone knows deep down in their psyche that there is no god. Thus, the need for fake (errrr faith).

Zac,
Why do you find Bright's to be distasteful? Does it seem arrogant to you?
Well I for one am not the type to hide my atheism and my belief that those who embrace a non-magical naturlistic worldview are indeed intellectually superior to those who are religious. Yes I look down on those who accept superstition over reason.
I agree that the abuse of seperation of church and state along with ignorance and outright lies have made atheists seem to be evil doers out to destroy America when nothing could be further from the truth. We need a PR campaign to portray non believers in a positive and attractive way.
Alex.
What'cha mean by, "minority?"

I know many; many atheists and most have doctoral-level degrees.

Did the survey call 2000 people with telephones in Northern Arkansas? Southern Mississippi? All Notre Dame campus lines? All 700 Club members?

I question the sample-size and methodology of the survey. Any way we could have a link to a reprint - not a mere abstract?

The interesting thing about being a professional and an atheist is how religion plays out in the profession. I?ve previously mentioned that the ?Christian? fundies are clingy, panicky, doubtful, commonly use magical thinking in their response to legal advice (I prayed for Jesus to guide you ?.) where the majority of people without strong ties to their faith are far less stressed by litigation and understand that there are factors that can be controlled and some that can?t.

I am always pleased with a positive result in a case ? and so are my clients. However, I note that the overly religious always thank their God (and, usually quibble over my fee) and the ?socially religious? are given to thanking my staff and me. Funny thing ? since most of my cases are ?contingency fee? ? meaning that I put out the majority of the money and only recover my investment and get paid if I win ? the ?socially religious? pay their fee and usually send cards and gifts for years after (not to mention, client referrals). The Fundies (note the cap ?F?) will suddenly find fault with my services and, in the Christian manner of settling differences, they suggest that I simply gift my entire fee (or the share of my fee that they contest) TO THEIR CHURCH.

I always refuse.

Why should I be ashamed that the vast majority of ignorant cretins distrust me? We're talking about some of the stupidest people in the world here. I take it as a compliment; people hate when their comfortable little beliefs are confronted.
