Awesome. Wonder how long of a walk it is from Oklahoma? Maybe I can come.

    Seriously, though, sounds good.

  2. rah62 says:

New poster here (please be gentle) and relatively new member of AA, although an atheist for going on 30 years now. This sounds like a great opportunity and I hope to make the trip from up here in Portland.

  3. ang6666 says:

Oh! That is only 10 minutes away from me. And already flagged on my bloglines so I dont’ forget. Thank you!

  4. Deadly Doomham says:

I’d love to come, but can’t for the same reasons as always.

  5. Sir Elderberry says:

Perhaps ‘anti-historians’ is the wrong wording? I think ‘anti-Jesus historians’ would be better…’anti-historians’ sounds like they warp history or something.

  6. spanders says:

Dave, did you hear about that book “Misquoting Jesus”?. I’d really like to dig into that one. Have a good time at the convention. I won’t be there. Maybe if you have one in NJ or in NC I would be there if I could go… just to lend support. If FreakGirl goes with the Greater Czarina, then it would be for fun!

  7. reluctantatheist says:

Holy crap, that’s not far from me either. I’m in Hayward. I may even be able to BART to it.
    Sir Elderberry:
Oaklahoma? Dude, you got my sympathies. That’s tough turf for an atheist, ain’t it?

  8. udonman says:

sir elderberry we need to organize one for us midwesterners

  9. FugaziGrrl says:

Hey… I’m new here… well, not new-new. I’ve been reading the Blog for several months (at least 6 or 7). I figured it was time to join the fray !

I’ve been an atheist all my life… and even a couple of fundy foster fathers with thick leather belts couldn’t change that.

I am so glad to find a forum where atheists and theists can debate the issues intelligently, and I’m looking forward to taking part in the discussion.

No… on topic… I’d love to attend the Athesit Meet. Odds are a combination of work and the duties of a mom will keep me from making the journey…

But it would be fun !!

Exactly…very perceptive of you. But then again, the Truth is always ignored.

  11. island57 says:

Sure do wish they’d have something like this on my coast! Why is all the good stuff in California?

  12. Richard says:

I abhor censorship, but that dumb bastard Phreedom can really grate on a guy.

  13. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

    Welcome to the blog, FugaziGrrl!

Aside from getting to hang out with fellow atheists, I think you’ll find that there are a few Fugazi fans here as well. ;)

  14. Zac Hunter says:

This is an important finding because it shows how important it is, for us as individuals, to improve our image. This is the type of thing that effects all of us. As much as I find the ‘Brights’ movement distasteful, I do appreciate their mission to show naturalism in a better light. I would also like to drop this study as a nice compliment to the last one I posted on American attitudes.

    Dave-
Thought this might warrant a new thread

Apparently we are the least trusted minority in the US accordng to a telephone survey on religion of 2000 people. We are also the group parents would least like to see their child marry…boo hoo!

  16. jimmerone says:

Half hour away on a good day for me. I’m looking forward to it.

  17. Sir Elderberry says:

Phreedm…that was the most out of context quotation and remark that I have ever heard. The evidence against Jesus historically is there, what I was referring to was calling them anti-historians…it sounds like they study anti-history, which they don’t.

Oaklahoma? Dude, you got my sympathies. That’s tough turf for an atheist, ain’t it?

I am the only nonbeliever I know of at my school. When there’s an FCA meeting during lunch in school, it attracts maybe 90% of the student body. Every teacher has a bible quote stuch by magnet SOMEWHERE (except my life science teacher, thank..something) We have local youth ministers in the cafeteria during lunch on Wednesdays so they can talk with their flock. You can always find a church shirt in every class, every day.

Yeah, not fun. What is fun, however is two things:

    1) Listening to them jabber.

    2) Watching the look on their face when I profess atheism.

  18. pixel says:

    rah62 and fugazi grrl–
    welcome!

rah – may I ask what the initials stand for? They happen to be the initials of my favorite author.

  19. Dagny2 says:

When is there going to be a conference of Atheists on the East coast (or even better, in the Southeast)? Actually, come to think of it, hosting one in the southeast might be dangerous…too many fundy rednecks with shotguns around here. If they’re willing to boycott certain rock concerts for being the devil’s music, I can imagine what they would try to do to a convention of Atheists.

  20. rah62 says:

    The initials are my initials.

  21. FugaziGrrl says:

Thanks for the welcomes from Pixel and Rainbows…

Aside from getting to hang out with fellow atheists, I think you’ll find that there are a few Fugazi fans here as well. ;)

Just for trivia’s sake, my “Fugazi” is a reference to Marillion, and their 1984 album of the same title.

Although I have heard the other and more famous Fugazi… Marillion just happened to inspire my nick…

Well, that and the fact that it means crazy, or “f*cked up”… and.. well… I do have a few screws loose !!

  22. rah62 says:

I miss having an vibrant active atheist group in town. I lived in Austin TX for a few years and they have a large group there of all ages, sizes and persuasions. A great group. I moved back home to Portland OR and found a very tiny group with pretentions of grandeur (they call themselves “United States Atheists”) and when I attended a couple of their meetings, there were maybe seven people there and I was the only person under age 65! So, I’m seriously hoping to be able to attend this function.

  23. reluctantatheist says:

Hey, just got back from a meeting of the S.F Atheist group. Loads of fun.
Speaker had a great topic:”The 10,000 Christs & the Evaporating Jesus”
David Fitzgerald did a fantastic job. New (at least to me) theory: he blames the whole mess of the NT on Alexander the Great!
Most of the info I knew already, but I learned a few new things.
1 guy behind me hooted when the Nag Hammadi was mentioned.
Man, I still crack up over that.
    Whoo-hoo!

  24. rah62 says:

Update: It does not appear I will be able to go. Adding up the airfare and two nights at the hotel, that’s pushing $500 – which is a bit much. Maybe next time.

  25. ang6666 says:

Oh yeah, just rub it in that you went.! Don’t forget to sign up at their site to be on their distro list.

  26. reluctantatheist says:

    ang6666:
Hey, sorry, already had a tattoo. ;)
Cute little German waitress didn’t understand what a draft was, ended up drinking a litre of Guinness.
Good thing I’m a big guy.
Got a free book out of the deal: Holy Blood, Holy Grail (precursor to DaVinci code, unless I miss my guess).
That was lotsa fun. I assume they go to Schroeder’s all the time?

  27. ang6666 says:

According to their site, every last Saturday of the month. I’ll be there next time.

  28. reluctantatheist says:

    ang6666:
Cool. Anyone else out there, who’s in the S.F Bay area?
Since the blog-down hasn’t really coalesced yet, maybe we can get our own little chapter of NGB goin’? (in a matter of speaking).
