Three Students Arrested in Alabama Church FiresBy JAY REEVES, AP
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March– Three college students were arrested Wednesday in a string of nine rural Alabama church arsons that allegedly were set first as “a joke” and later as an attempt to divert a massive arson investigation.(snip)The three suspects were all white, and were either attending or had been enrolled at Birmingham-Southern, a liberal arts school affiliated with the Methodist church.Five of the burned churches were destroyed and four were damaged, including one in which congregants, alerted during the night that churches were afire, arrived just as the apparent arsonists were leaving. That fire, quickly put out, had been set in the sanctuary near the altar – a pattern in the other church arsons in Bibb County and West Alabama.Jim Parker, pastor of Ashby Baptist Church at Brierfield, a Bibb County church destroyed in the Feb. 3 arson, said the congregation has been apprehensive about whether the arsonists had some “political or religious agenda.”"I want to find out the motivation of these young men. Young folks get some crazy ideas,” he said.
If only we had some way to force the churches and private schools to teach Atheistic morals. These kids need more Atheism in their life! Maybe we should put disclaimers in their bibles…

darrow one little comment about your closing argument
sorry pal if i was a juror you just lost the case by personally attacking there character and applying your own moral standards upon the court it could undermine your entire case to me
I would not call them atheistic morals. I would just call them rational morals. We need to reach rationality and at enhanced level. For that to work we have to enhance the whole educational system so that our adolescents become able to grasp abstract concepts earlier and let them free from superstitition
Udonman,
The”god” quote was for this forum – I’d never use it in any court.
If you had a problem with, “Send then to jail for the rest of their miserable, worthless lives and save the community from any more harm from these three scoundrels.”
Well, that’s pretty much EVERY prosecutor’s close.
You also haven’t heard the opening of the close that says nothing I say is evidence – the questions of fact belong to the jury and you must make your own decision based upon the testimony and exhibits.
Now, however badly I may have pissed you off, are you actually going to hang a jury where three idiots burned down nine churches? Is your dislike for strong legal argument so great that the guilty should be set free?
I don’t think the 11 other members of that jury would agree with you. I also expect that a majority of my juries ARE racist and an appeal against racism will force most racist jurors to keep their racism hidden.
So, tell me that you have read the USDOJ information & charging document and the closing of a closing argument (these things usually run 45 minutes in Fed.Ct.) and that you would acquit any one of the three arsonists?
By the way, the jury doesn’t really get to set the sentence in Federal Court – the Reagan administration saddled us with mandatory sentencing guidelines back in 1988. We are only now beginning to swing back to a little judicial discrection.
What did you think of my reason for quitting the borough DA’s office? Tain’t all what Law & Order shows….
Phreedm:
Well shoot, I guess we’ve been caught red-handed. Might as well come right out and admit that the real goal of the Vast Secular Conspiracy is to abduct christian children from Sunday School, burn down their churches, and force them to watch gay p_orn.
Oh yeah, and free abortions for all 12 year olds after we force them to have sex with their Satanic EVILutionist teachers
(How much you guys want to bet he takes that seriously?)
darrow sorrow i didnt mean to offend you i was just trying to give you a little critiscm your argoument was very strong all i was trying to get at is the way you used the character attack could hang a jury
i love your post its just i have a little bit of knowledge about the legal sytem (no ive never been on trial) and ive seen the reaction of jurors to character attacks
ps how is the case going
darrow I forgot something i wasn’t thinking of federal court you are right about the sentencing
and you never did piss me off but you are starting to (just kidding)
r4d
Not too long ago, the intricacies of the secret handshake were being bandied about.
Now you begin revealing the real goals of the the Vast Secular Conspiracy?!?!?!
ACK!
We’re doomed.
Character attacks are appropriate where the facts call for them.
Imagine how the closing went for Jeffrey Dahmer? What a redeeming character he was, eh?
The only defense he had was in post-conviction mitigation. However, his family was normal and supportive – no childhood horror stories of abuse (except the abuse he heaped on pets).
Three idiots in college who burn nine churches equals death by old-age behind bars.
How this three came together and went into the business of burning churches would be interesting to find out. I doubt that anybody will ever know how this happened – but I wouldn’t be shocked to find out that they were members of a hate group.
The college pranks I played or were played on me usually had something to do with stealing the last beer, locking somebody into their dorm room, dropping M-80′s into the ROTC trash can, and trying to get the attention of my friends’ girlfriends.
The worst thing that happened was one of my undergrad classmates was hit by a drunk-driver driving a stolen truck – who hit Jan – while she was riding her horse. Killed both the horse and the gal. He got 3 years and Jan’s friends had to search her apartment and remove evidence that she was having sex – she came from a very strong Roman Catholic family and the funeral might have been very different if the family thought she was sinning.
I suspect that the majority of us here (not you Phredummy) with college degrees have similar experiences. Nobody engaged in crimes beyond underage drinking, petty (and, I do mean petty) theft and the odd traffic infraction.
Back 30 years ago there were abandoned newborn babies – but not at my school (or, if there were, we never knew). The women I knew would fly to England for an abortion – Roe was decided in ’73 and the ramp-up time for the procedure didn’t leave the brighter and wealthier any choice but to go to a civilized nation. The Irish have been doing the same thing for almost 50 years now.
Religion always makes sex a sin…. damn stupid idea.
well Darrow we civilly disagree you are the lawyer here i am not
sorry about your friend Jan its always painful to lose a friend in situations like that in highschool i lost a friend but to sucide not a drunk driver but still its tough
phreedm’s church maybe
r4d….a rather emotional over the top response….but obviously there’s a sliver of truth in it.
Absolutely no one refuted what Dave said. That in itself amazes me…
And who said there are “No Absolutes”?
Phreedm
Are you out of your fucking mind? Oh wait, maybe that’s a dumb question.
Refute what? IT WAS A JOKE! It was irony, sarcasm. His point was that the christian majority would never stand for it if the government paid us to force our ideals on believers, but for some reason it’s perfectly fine for them to do it. Do you understand anything at all? Also, you are flat out wrong – Jeremy DID respond to your ridiculous accusation 03/10/06 @ 13:08:
So there you go.
And BTW – my response was not emotional. Over the top? Sure I guess – over the top SARCASM, which relies on the concept of IRONY, something that you obviously have absolutely no sense of.
Must suck to be you.
r4d fuck phreedm man he just stirs shit up i am sure no one here would care if i start deleting his post but i wont i will let Dave decide its his blog
I wouldn’t 4-q Phredummy with your dick
The arsonists were jews and the churches were baptist. The jews were acting on a fatwa put forth in 2005 by Abraham Foxman, the leader of the jew supremacist hate group Anti-defamation League.
