This is especially true when religious institutions become involved in politics.
Playing devil's advocate, I think there's a difference between the churches that are run as businesses and those that meet in someone's basement. Where to draw the line, I do not know.

I'm all for taxing Big Religion, but less comfortable with placing a burden on those small groups that want to explore their peculiar mysticisms.

HNZ,
If the primary purpose of said building & property is superstition, and people give money to said person leading the pack, tax it. It's a business like everything else.

If it's more like a book club, in somebody's basement, who pays their fair share of burden, and no one is making monetary donations, I say leave it alone.

Now, what I say should happen is that a new church tax be implemented, and all money raised be added to the NSF's budget. That would benefit humanity more than singing songs by pretty glass.

Just imagine: All those mega churches sending a portion of their unholy income to a science fund.

The thought alone is giving me a warm feeling inside :)

I'm not so sure an open library catering towards atheists isn't on the same general level as a bake sale...

But yes, they should be taxed like everyone else.

Now the have made their money the park in closing and the owners are
Praise the lord and pass the plate

On my recent visit to Portugal I learned that all religious institutions there (including the Catholic Church) pay taxes allegedly with no complaint. Apparently it's another way of 'giving to the community' - why can't our churches adopt this perspective in the States?

As I recall, the historical reason for churches being tax-free was that they were presumed (correctly for the most part) to be primarily non-profit organizations which benefitted the community. However, this does not seem to be true in far too many cases nowadays, so I think Dave's recommendation has merit. If a church wishes to have tax-free status, then it should meet the same criteria any other tax-free charitable organization must meet.

Churches seem to be more interested in making a profit, these days, than they used to be. I think they should have to pay taxes, now, just like everyone else.
