Justice Alito gushed, “the prayers of so many people from around the country were a palpable and powerful force,” and added: “As long as I serve on the Supreme Court, I will keep in mind the trust that has been placed in me.”"We are very concerned that a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court is going out of his way to thank the leadership of a group that considers it a godly duty to gut the First Amendment separation of church and state and roll back decades of social progress on issues like civil liberties,” said Ellen Johnson, President of American Atheists. “The justices of the Supreme Court need to consider the Constitution and Bill of Rights when deciding cases. We need to know exactly what Justice Alito means when he says he will ‘keep in the mind the trust’ of extremist evangelical groups headed by politicized preachers like James Dobson.”Dave Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists, said that the Alito letter is more than just a casual “thank you” note to a supporter.”Justice Alito seems to be going out of his way to assure Dobson that he will be thinking of the Focus ‘agenda’ as part of his judicial role.”"Is the Dobson court now in session?” Silverman asked.AMERICAN ATHEISTS is a nationwide movement that defends civil rights for Atheists; works for the total separation of church and state; and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy.
To be clear, nothing illegal has been done in this memo. Mr. Alito is far too smart to do something illegal on paper. All we’re saying here is that the Bush administration, which is reputed to do a lot of business on winks and nods, seems to be extending that philosophy. Judge Alito may have been being polite, but it certainly sounds like he was giving reassurance. Not surprising, but not too good either!

Slimmins:
I always forget that Washington quote. GW was a communicant, but from what I gather from infidels.org, he never partook.
On his deathbed, his final act? Measured his pulse.
Adams was a Unitarian.
Splitter! (gleefully copped from ‘Life of Brian’).
Is it just me or are they’re arguments just getting progressively worse? Most of them can’t even argue. They have no defense. It’s like they scream, “God exists,” and then stuff their fingers in their ears.
their arguments*
It’s way too early to be typing.
Would someone tell me what the first amendment has to do with reading the bible and evangelical magazines during work hours.
I work under a supervisor/manager who of course works under our department head. He reads his bible during work hours, in between his work during a normal work day. Some people read the newspaper, magazines that are non religions. I do understand that sometimes there is a down time for a few minutes in every office job. That’s when we are to organize our work, restock on supplies necessary to perform our work duties, etc.
This supervisor brings up God during work hours. Long story short. I told him he is lucky he can discuss God at work because many other offices do not allow it. He said I have my first amendment right. I am protected by the first amendment. I felt like saying you should be concentrating on your work not preaching.
He thinks I am an athiest and hates me for it. He has made this very clear. He really shouldn’t even be asking me or accusing me of being anything. But he is in charge of me and can get away with almost anything. He has all the power and I don’t want any trouble. I cannot afford to loose my job. He is discriminating against me because he hates atheists and thinks he has some right to preach during work hours.
Sexual Harassment courses should start teaching that this is not to be tolerated. Problem is that this man may very well be somewhat connected politically. This gives him power. He’s not a politician but who knows which politician he is friends with.
These people should not be allowed to bring up God, Jesus, or any religion at all at work. Why are they allowed to do this?
It’s bad enough coming to work and seeing another employee in another dept. sit at the reception desk all day long with literally no work, she spends 3-4 hours every morning reading then newspaper to see if it fits in with the bible, reads bible quotes and preaches every chance she gets and gets paid to do it! The previous clerk to the board tried to stop her, but her first amendment allowed her to continue. The employer couldn’t even get her to do her preaching, religious reading, during her breaks or lunch. Nope she was allowed to do this while getting paid by the government County job.
Now this man is discriminating against atheists! He has the power to go to the dept. head and bring up any and all pidilly typos, mistakes to get me fired because he hates atheists. So anyone who is an atheist has to live in fear of loosing their job.
The receptionist in the other dept. gets a 15 min. break in the morning and hour for lunch and 15 min. break in the afternoon. The manager doesn’t get specific breaks but gets an hour for lunch. But being in charge of himself and me, he can take a break anytime he wants.
There is more but I must be careful. Working in an goverment job with politicians leads me to be suspicious of their capability to hack into my blogs.
No one should have tolerat this! no matter what we are or aren’t.
Jesus Rocks
