Nope, I don't celebrate it or even care about it. It's one of those holidays that I tend to forget about, unless I'm reminded of it.

It's just another manufactured holiday from the secretive and shadowy greeting card and florist cabal to encourage mass consumerism. :-)
alexgator1:

It's just another manufactured holiday from the secretive and shadowy greeting card and florist cabal to encourage mass consumerism.

Actually, no it's not.
Valentine's day originated in the catacombs of Rome, where 1 St. Valentinus used to join xtians in secret wedlock during persecution.
Yep. It's a religious holiday.
Man, hope my next GF is an atheist. How can I refuse to bring her flowers & chocolate, because of its religious origins?
What woman other than an atheist would understand?

I celebrate it if whomever I am with chooses to. My girlfriend likes the idea of a day to, above and beyond the norm, celebrate our relationship. to do extra special things for each other. I look at this as a cultural reinforcement of love. thats it. I could give a rats ass if it does have the word 'Saint' in it. (not like most people say the saint part anymore anyway)

I agree with Dave though, it may be a drummed up Hallmark holiday, but at least it treats a serious human and cultural artifact. I think it is a neat idea I guess. Marketing and hallmark can make it a little pernicious, but so what. Thats what marketing and hallmark exist for, to make people feel guilty enough to open their wallets for not being sentimental enough. Just dont buy a card. problem solved. I thik the real problem is that people feel that buying things like cards at hallmark is a sufficient and, most often, official commemoration of a holiday. How uncreative. But as I said, that is the nature of capitalism, no surprise.
V-day is just another of many obligatory shopping holidays designed to appeal to the collectivist mindset. (Everyone does it so we have to too.) But being purely secular, despite the word saint, it has no positive or negative connotation to atheists, either you like it or you don't.

No, my husband and I don't really celebrate, but I wouldn't mind some Asti.
However, I *just* posted about this on my blog because of some comments that my sons teacher made about Valentine's Day being a Catholic holiday. She told us that they were celebrating VD as "friendship day" and that she would supply the cards for my son since we were atheist. I told her that I had no problems with my son passing out VD cards, and the same goes for wearing green on St. Patricks Day. I mean, let's be realistic. I may not celebrate these days but I'm not going to shield my son from the rest of the world.

I would just like to say that calling it VD is really funny to me...the idea, Cassandra (and no offense at all, really) of your son passing out VD cards cracks me up. Anyone else see the irony there?
Blue Valentines:

"
She sends me
blue valentines
All the way
from philadelphia
To mark the anniversary
Of someone that I used to be
And it feels like a warrant
is out for my arrest
Baby, you got me checkin' in my rearview mirror
That's why I?m always on the run
Thats why I changed my name
And I didn?t think you?d ever find me here

To send me blue valentines
Like half forgotten dreams
Like a pebble in my shoe
As I walk these streets
And the ghost of your memory
baby, is the thistle in the kiss
It's the burgler that can break a roses neck
It?s the tatooed broken promise
I gotta hide beneath my sleeve
I'm gonna see you every time I turn my back

She sends me blue valentines
Though I try to remain at large
They?re insisting that our love
Must have a eulogy
Why do I save all of this madness
In the nightstand drawer?
There to haunt upon my shoulders
Baby I know,
I?d be luckier to walk around everywhere I go
With this blind and broken heart
That sleeps beneath my lapel

Still, these blue valentines
To remind me of my cardinal sin
I can never wash the guilt
Or get these bloodstains off my hands
And it takes a whole lotta whiskey
To make these nightmares go away
And I cut my bleedin' heart out every nite
And I'm gonna die
just a little more on each st. valentines day
Don't you remember that I promised I would
Write you...
These blue valentines
Blue valentines
Blue valentines."
Basically, a Holy Day is a holliday, which means a party which means WHATEVER.
Who CARES about the "bleh" other than the terminally anal?
ANY excuse for a party,
means I get another chance to beat my own world record at breaking the barrier of drunken and dripping fun.... Plus! I get to drag a crew with me into those uncharted but never unsampled waters!
