Assisted suicide — the Atheist view

Well, actually it’s THIS atheist’s view!Today the SCOTUS helped out the assisted suicide advocates.

WASHINGTON (Jan. 17) – The Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked the Bush administration’s attempt to punish doctors who help terminally ill patients die, protecting Oregon’s one-of-a-kind assisted-suicide law.

While I personally support the right for anyone to die with dignity, I don’t want that right for myself. As I see it, I’d rather be a living vegetable than dead, since death is nonexistance and it scares the pee out of me. I’d rather be a veggie (as long as my family is financially stable) with a 1% chance of consciousness than a dead guy with none.I think most people (even Atheists) disagree with me on this point. Too bad. I ain’t leaving. Leave that plug alone!

You should take 2 steps back, 2 breaths, & try to walk a mile in another’s shoes.

Have you ever considered giving that advice to rainbows4dinosaurs?

How would you feel if I did the same to you?

By that do you mean you pointing out an unbecoming reference I made about my family?

I think you might respond in a similar manner as r4d did

While I can certainly empathize with his anger at what he clearly misperceived, I also firmly believe in the axiom that discretion is the better part of valor and would have tempered my response accordingly.

(& I am aware there are some who may have taken a dig or 2 in the past).

?May have taken a dig or 2?? Are you honestly that oblivious to the number and viciousness of the remarks made about me here? Correct me if I?m wrong, but I?m unaware of anyone ever wishing you or rainbows4dinosaurs were dead.

I might also remind you, that you’re representing here. I don’t need to tell you who or what, you know this already.

As is everyone who posts here is. And, thanks, but I?m constantly aware of that fact and as such I believe I?ve exercised remarkable restraint in choosing what posts to dignify with a response and carefully measuring their content.

It takes an adult to apologize.

True, and I?ve done so on many occasions before here, and am not above doing so again. So, in the interest of civility I will concede the possibility of his misinterpretation and say:

    rainbows4dinosaurs,

I apologize for wording my post in such a way that misled you from what my true intention was. I meant no malice toward your children and would never do such a thing either in public or in private. In the future I will redouble my efforts to ensure that what I have to say here will address only the points being argued and refrain from any further personal implications.

I don’t know if this has any bearing on your “thinking like a flat earther” idea, but

I remember, when I was little, I was always trying to dig holes to China . I never thought I was going to dig through lava, but I did know I would hit rock. I can’t remember how old I was, or how much I actually knew about the Earth. Don’t think I was in school yet. I knew the earth was round, not flat, but I had absolutely no concept of the depth of it.
Maybe people back then thought of it like a mirror image in water, where the part below the ground extended no deeper than say, the highest mountains within view above ground.
    Interesting to think about.

Sometimes. But usually I keep my mouth shut. Usually it sorts out w/o my butting in.

By that do you mean you pointing out an unbecoming reference I made about my family?

I meant by taking potshots at your family. Sorry. Didn’t qualify that proper.

May have taken a dig or 2?? Are you honestly that oblivious to the number and viciousness of the remarks made about me here?

    That’s called understatement, FYI.
No, I’m not. Don’t recall anyone wishing you dead, BTW.
I was referring to your parenting skills (which I don’t think anyone has ever taken a pot shot at, which I could be wrong about).

I am aware, however, of people calling you all sorts of nonsense, as far as I can tell, much of it untrue.

This may get my membership card pulled, & a few folks heated up at me, but as far as I can tell, you’re honest, & very intelligent. I feel that you’re misled, but that’s my subjective reality. & you’re several notches above many of the theists here (spanders is the best: as #2, you’re just gonna have to try harder, ;) ).

    ‘Nuff said.

Speaking of the OT, I used a condensed copy to wipe up some spilled coffee at school today.

    WHAT???!!!
    I find this GROSSLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!
You get to have COFFEE at school!!!???

Why, Young Man, I’ll have you know, when I was your age, I had to walk barefoot,6 miles through the SNOW, UPHILL, BOTH WAYS, in SPRINGTIME, with nothing but my Bible to fend off the carnivorous dinosaurs and Sabre-Toothed Tigers, just to get to school. And when I got there, do you think there was any coffee there for ME?
    NOOOOOOOOOOO!
That’s the trouble with the world today; you youngsters are so spoiled!

You know, JCC never answered the question that some one posed earlier: If God commanded that he kill a child as Abraham was commanded to, could he do it? I personally would tell God to piss of in no uncirtain terms.

Watching wood-powered television was the worst!
And if your fire went out, you had to wait and wait for the sky god to send a flame bolt down, hope it hit somewhere close and started a fire, then go gather some of it.
And everywhere you went, those damn 6 miles of uphill snow!!!!

About god telling Abraham to kill a child. . .

Anybody here read the “His Dark Materials” trilogy by Philip Pullman? One of the only blatantly atheist children’s series I know of. Don’t wanna spoil the climax, but let’s just say it is the exact opposite of god killing a child.

  14. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

We love His Dark Materials here at the rainbowsaur house. What shape is your daemon?

Back to the comment on the beginning of John, it has been speculated that John was slipped in primarily because most of the end of it agreed with the so-calles synoptic gospels. John is very much a “gnostic gospel” and as such should be considered heretical by the decrees of the Council of Trent and the Council of Lycea. The concept of god being the “Word” goes back to the greek concept of “logos” (i.e. logos translates to word) which is the subjective experience of “oneness with god”. Circular, but interesting just the same.

Excuse me, but I’d like to read the book 1st, maybe I could’ve figured it out, but that’s just a pet peeve o’ mine.
It’s like shouting out who the killer is at a whodunit movie in the theater 1/2 thru the movie.

  21. Deadly Doomham says:

Haha yeah I’m sorry, it was just a bit of humour. There is a lot of great reading in those books, I haven’t spoiled much.

This is to the guy who wrote the blog. You said death is nonexistance. So your saying after you die you no longer exist? Well I would be scared too, but you do continue to exist. You either live in paradise or you are in constant pain and torture for the rest of eternity. Do you really want to chance that? Your choice.
    God bless you.

I am the ONLY person here who has been on life support for months and had the ‘plug’ pulled. I was on a feeding tube and a respirator. I did not completely die when they turned off the machines. My wife had put in a do not revive order and they left me alone to die. We had previously talked about this terrible possibility.
Nothing I can say will change anyone’s mind about God. I do not care if it does or if it doesn’t. I am still here. I lost half my body and 95% of my brain. I have no memories of any of my first 36 years. I wish I could remember my children or anything important we say we would never forget.Just add a dot com to my name and you can read about what is left.

I am just wondering about how some of the members on here feel about suicide as it relates to atheism and so fourth. I personally probably have an opinion much like the author of this article, different. I feel that suicide to an Atheist (or any non-religious person) is a matter of personal choice. I personally feel its okay and am looking foward to it. I believe that by ending my life, I end my journey. As a lazy human being, why cannot I have a lazy journey? Without punishing family members financial benefits and such. I am all for suicide among people of good health and sound mental state. On the other topic though, I say its a family or friend matter. Ask whoever is closest to the person. If there is no one, then pull the plug. Hospitals are a business btw.

  28. philosophicaljt says:

    About what “imachristian” said.

I believe that once you are dead….you are nonexsistant. There is no paradise, or pain. Your brain and your body stop functioning and thats it. Much like before you are born. You don’t exsist. Also, on this quote from you..”Do you really want to chance that?” Thats a horrible reason to believe in a GOD. Are you saying that you belive in a GOD because of fear of being wrong? Thats not very Christian of you.
