I read somewhere that 2000 years ago the 25th of December was the solstice, due to the precession of the earth's axis. Anybody know if this is true?

Personally, I like to separate Xmas, the Commercial holiday which I like to celebrate, from Christmas, the stolen Roman Holiday that Christians celebrate.

I tend to agree with the post. Christmas is not something everyone in America, albeit the overwhelming majority, celebrates. If America has seperation of church and state, why is Christmas a federal holiday? It's obviously a religious holiday.

Nice brief of the situation, Dave. I also blogged about this, although I'm a bit more long-winded and emotional, at
http://timsnamelessblog.blogspot.com/

I had a long discussion of this very issue with a Jewish co-worker. It's not that we don't like to get the day off, or that we don't want Christians to enjoy their freedom of religion, it's just that it subjugates everyone else. As you said, I have no choice in the matter. I agree that I'd rather get a day off on MY birthday as opposed to the traditional birthday of someone else's mythological leader.
