Dave- I will second that: the solstice gathering was a great celebration and the speakers were wonderful! It was great to meet everyone. I so often feel like the only atheist in the state. Thanks for organizing the event. Now I have to go find a candidate. :)
Totally off subject, but just wanted to get some feed back on a question.

If Jesus were alive today (assuming he was an historic personality and not a Christian invention), would he be an atheist?

Jesus was fed up with the religious establishment and his belligerence turned into a cultic offshoot of Judaism; or, as someone once noted, the world's most successful cult.

But atheism was not a rational option to a Jew living in Palestine 2,000 years ago.

Your thoughts???

I think, if he actually existed, that Jesus was a deluded religious zealot.

I think he would have been a cult leader - you know, give up all your worldly possessions, leave your family, and follow me.

I think he would have have been fairly non-violent - he might have done something like go destroy the 700 Club's facilities for misuse of church funds (you know, along the lines of chasing the moneychangers out of the temple) - but don't think he'd be like David Koresh or Jim Jones.

When I traveled in the Middle East ALL of the hotels required you to put your religion down on the registration form. I know this is still true in Saudi Arabia but not in some other countries like Qatar. Anyway, my point is that athieism in an Islamic country is subject to a swift and terrible death. No tolerance at all, trust me. Obviously I put christain down so as to leave martyrdom to the christians. Athieism isn't welocme in the Jewish religion either and if the christians could get away with it, at least the right wingers, we would ALL be dead by now after a house to house search. All is fair in love, war and religion!

If Jesus was an athiest he would have kept it very quiet indeed!

Seeker:

Jesus was fed up with the religious establishment

Here's an interesting title for you - Andrew Harvey's Son of Man , very interesting (albeit a tad on the new agey side, if memory serves).
1 of his points was that JC was a rebel w/a cause, upsetting the apple cart, etc.
SNTC might appreciate this title too, as the 2nd 1/2 of the book is devoted to Mary, & the feminine side that's so downplayed in the history.

I read this some yrs ago, so some of my observations may be a bit off.

I thought Harvey came off as a Gnostic, but I tend to be a revisionist, so wadoo I know?
(that's a bit of self-effacing humor, just so it's not deliberately misinterpreted, BTW).

So, we see how Dave and others celibrated their winter solstice, how about everyone else?

We usually celibrate the solstice by ourselves by opening presents, a big dinner and a log on the fire on the 21st then we spend christmas with our extended family members on the 25th. My kids LOVE it! They get two holidays of presents.

And I agree if Jesus was an atheist he would have kept it to himself.

When my husband went to Iraq the first time and he had to stay in Kuwiat(sp? brainfart)for a few days before heading over to Iraq he was warned not to say anything about his atheism in both places. Most of the ME is pretty intolerent of atheism from my understanding.

RA

Just when I was starting to really miss you, there you are. :)

I have been reading up on the Gosples of Mary and I really am looking forward to the Sophia of Jesus. I dont know if it was a conspiracy, but there sure is a lot of covering up going on when it comes to the female aspect of religion. In EVERY religion that I have looked into there is evidence of the patriarch trying to hide(and in some cases very badly) the fact that god was once worsshipped as a goddess or had a female consort. Have you noticed that as well?

If Jesus were alive today, there wouldn't have been 2000 years of christianity weighing down upon us. Perhaps some other form of monotheism would've taken its place, but I think it is more likely that classicism would've endured longer, probably resulting in an even stronger secular culture than we have today. So given that scenario, a modern atheist Jesus wouldn't have much of an impact.
