Jerry Falwell and his ilk have to perpetuate this sense of xtian victimhood and threats to xianity in order to scare the flock into sending money. The nonexistant "War on Christmas" is the same as the "War Against Traditional Marriage" and uses an easily demonized and often quiet group of people to incite panic and get the donations and votes rolling in. Without a sense of impending doom and victimazation the RR would be unable to hold onto it's influence.
It's kinda funny, because if one tries hard enough one can remember when "Happy Holidays" was simply an abbreviation of "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." It later evolved to include Hanukkah, then Kwanzaa, then even Thanksgiving - all with the very american intent of maximizing returns from this very important shopping season.

Do americans really have such short memories? (I'm not really asking. I know the answer, unfortunately)
Personally, my vote for many years has been "Bah Humbug"

That kind of sums up my feeling on the commercial xmas season.

Having said that I do like the actual day. Being with family, and the giving and receiving of MODEST presents is very pleasant.

The whole thing about Christmas is that it was founded as a religious holiday. That would be like you guys starting an athiest holiday and then I wanted to change it to fit my beliefs. If you had a holiday and I disagreed with it, I'd simply ignore it or simply concern myself with holidays that suit me.

C'mon Jerry,

Xmas is a Roman replacement for the celebration of the (Northern hemisphere) winter solstice. The Romans were apt, rather than trying to eradicate existing festivals, merely rebrand them to fit within the roman gestalt.

Eventually they hope that people will be ignorant enough of their own history to believe that the current situation was always in its current form.
