Narnia Central

Lots of talk about the Narnia movie. While I’ve not seen the movie yet, I know lots of people says it’s an allegory to Christianity. They say the same thing about Charlie Brown.I saw the Passion, and it was just a gory Sunday School film. The CON includes a talking lion, and the movie’s producers comment was along the lines of “Well, Jesus didn’t rip out anyone’s throat in the Bible.” On the other hand, during an interview with the Press Enterprise in California, the reporter told me there were special ads geared towards Christians highlighting the religious overtones (like the Passion). I had no problem with that.Did you see this movie? Was it preachy? Was it transparent? Or was it just a good fictional movie based loosely on old mythology?

Ta Mo (Buddha) traveled from India to China to teach, & indirectly founded the Shaolin Monastery.

That wasn’t Siddhartha (The Buddha,) that was a monk by the name of Bodhi Dharma who came to China about 1000 years (539 AD or there about) after Siddhartha’s death (483 BC.)

But I wouldn’t venture to guess just how historical either of those guys really are.

    Thanx for the correction.

    You are correct.

    SNTC:
    from answers.com – Buddha -
“Few of the details of the Buddha’s life can be independently verified, and it is difficult to determine what is history and what is myth. Therefore this article will describe the life of Siddhartha Gautama as told in the earliest available Buddhist texts.”
No clear answers on that 1, either.

Man, I dont know where to begin….first of all CON is not an allegory. It is what is called a “Suposal” the idea is supise there was a world like Narnia, and supose the redemption of Narnia from the curse of the White Witch was similar to the story of Jesus redeeming mankind from curse in Eden…

second, Shultz was not an atheist, and niether was Disney, if no other reason that Disney was a devout mason and to be a mason you have to believe in GOD

third Im not sure who the author was that was mentioned as saying that the Bible is the least historically proven writing….but please….back that one up….there hasnt been one historical proof or archeological proof against the Bible ever….in fact several non Xtian scolars and archeologists have admitted that the Bible is extremely credible in these areas…..

any bets as to how much CON will beat box office records?

    Use a spell-checker next time.
Then it’s a simile, metaphor, call it what you like. Parallelism.

Wrong about Schulz, but Disney’s atheism is pretty much hearsay. Provide proof about the masonry thing, please.

    Prof. G. A. Wells.
Provide proof the Exodus ever happened, please. Archeological proof, that is.
Try taking notes. Might help a little.

Thanks guys on the info about the historical evidence of Buddha. Even though the evidence is sketchy, its still a hell of a lot more than the evidence of Jesus.

    mubetakappa

I dont recall anyone saying that there wasnt any archaeological evidence for any of the stories from the bible, but there is absolutely NO evidence what so ever of the exodus.

As a militant feminist atheist, I know there is a lot of archaeological evidence of places and some people from the bible. BUT, that still does not prove it is the written word of a so called “loving god”. All it proves is that the bible is the horrifying history of selfesh blood thursty men who violently invaded pagan lands, killing all men, women and children except for the young virgins, they took as war booty. War kidnapping and rape are the biggest part of the chosen mens history and the believers today still glorify it as the “good book” and have the freaking nerve to blame all the war, violence and crazzy shit on non believers and the radical feminists.

    What a hoot!

Re-read original posting, please, where it says ‘Most people say’.
Peach was talking about the comic ‘Peanuts’ as allegory, or rather how other people claim it is.

who the author was that was mentioned as saying that the Bible is the least historically proven writing

    Again, take notes.
It was the historical veracity of JC that was brought into question, not the entire book of fables.
I can tell you don’t know where to begin.

    say_no,
Sorry, I’m not ignoring you… just incredibly busy! I have read the Da Vinci Code, it was a selection in my book discussion group last year. I have to say I don’t think it was that well-written, but the premise was fascinating and he obviously did a lot of research. It certainly turned the Catholic Church on its head because we have a couple of RC’s in our discussion group and they did not like the idea AT ALL that Jesus could have been married. They were very uncomfortable though the whole discussion but I have to give them credit for reading the book and attending the discussion. I myself thought it was pretty funny, and quite likely, IF he existed at all. I did buy the paperback of “Holy Blood, Holy Grail”, but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I also have the “Gospel of Mary”…have you read that?

I also like System of a Down. My son has one of their CDs. Sometimes I listen to whatever he leaves in the car and end up liking it, sometimes not. Had no idea their parents were ME immigrants.

NO worries, I have kids, 10, 12 and 16 yrs and I am still busy running around after them, although not so much cuz I have to, but cuz they are really good at suckering me into their evil cookie making skeems. lol

I would love to find a book discussion group like that! I will try to find one after the holidays.
I havent read any of the books you mentioned, but I took a womens study class and one of our required refernce books was ‘The Women’s Encyclapedia’ by Barbra Walker and she covers everything about the history of women and religion. They sell the book at most book stores or online, if you are interested. I know all the friends I lent the book to brought it back the next day cuz they went out and bought their own copy, its that good. American Atheist used it for references for the artical about the origins of the fish symbol on their website.
I have also read many of Elain Pagals books on the Gnostic gospels. She was one of the first scholars to research the unearth gospels found in a cave in Egypt(I believe is where they were found?)

I would realy like to read the gospel of Mary. Was it any good and can you give me a brief discription?

  10. avatar Peach63 says:

    say_no,
I’ve been wanting to read “Encyclopedia” by Walker. I think they have it at my library. I’ve got so many things I want to read and never any time!

The Gospel of Mary is basically just the very short gospel then a critique..the one I have is by Jean-Yves Leloup & Jacob Needleman, but there are more books on the subject.

You can read the gospel itself and history at this link:

    http://www.gnosis.org/library/marygosp.htm

It has some metaphysical leanings so you can imagine it’s not very popular with the fundamentalists, also they’re probably not crazy about a gospel attributed to a female writer, anyway. I love it when I’m in a discussion with someone about Mary Magdalene, and I ask them to show me the scripture where it says she’s a prostitute, and obviously they can’t because it isn’t there. That’s when you know that most of them really never bother to read their own holy book.

Here is a link to system of a down site. They are also big time activists! They are all members of Amnisty international and their lyrics focus a lot on their political and anti-religious views. GREAT band! I got hooked on them the same way you did, my son.
Just think in the “good old days” they would be skinned alive and deemed satan worshippers. lol

    http://www.systemofadown.com/

I’m with you on all the books I want to read and just dont have time. Right now I am reading Adam’s Curse by Bryan Sykes. He is a professor of genetics at the university of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University. I read his last book The Seven Daughters of Eve and both books are amazingly easy reads and very informative. I am learning a lot!

You are going to love the womens encyclopedia! I love it and still refer back to it for info. all the time. Its not the kind of book you can read from cover to cover unless you plan on devoting a month to doing nothing but reading it. lol

I like pointing out to christians that no where in the bible does it say Mary M was a prostitute as well. heehee Aint it funny how most christians have no clue whats in the bible or the history of christianity. I cant help but think to myself everytime {dumbass}. lol

Yes, sorry for not using the spell check, my time was/is limited in playing here…

so how many of you are really hinging your atheistic beliefs on historical and archaeological proof?

I would venture to say that the number of you that this is true is very small. Most decide not to believe because of personal issues with a Xtian not because of lack of proof, which is totally understandable!

But for those that really ask…”where is the proof” just type “biblical proof” or anything like that into Google….for those that are too lazy, here are some links to get you started…

    looking forward to future dialogue!

BTW Thank you Edwin Kagin for being a guest on our web-cast show last Sunday night! It was great!

NARNIA is blatantly Christian. Come on. The allegories aren’t even subtle.

There’s been much talk about Peanuts and Christianity. There have been books published with titles like THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO PEANUTS.

I’m a longtime avid Peanuts fan but I certainly wouldn’t call the strip an allegory to the Christian faith. It certainly dealt with matters of theology and was not ashamed to do so, but it was nothing too preachy.

Schulz was an avid Christian for much of his life and even taught Bible studies regularly. Towards the end of his life, he began identifying himself as a secular humanist and expressed disgust over the sugary saccharine goodness of The Family Circus.

(You don’t have to be an atheist to experience nausea while reading Family Circus.)
