AT:
Thnx for the link, but the cars in the background are off in a distance.
David's original post stipulates that they're 12 feet tall.
I completely agree with the lawsuit. It's unfortunate what it will do to reinforce the negative stereotypes we receive. The spin they'll put on this is going to be brutal.

I will preface this with saying I understand the point of the lawsuit, but in terms of economy of resources there may a better way to accomplish one's goals. As a designer, I get involved in cultural understanding of symbols all the time. In our culture the cross has become so ubiquitous that I think that it's lost some meaning. Again, I understand that the cross has baggage and is the most common symbol of the relgion.

Here's my point; I think the resources that would be spent on this lawsuit will end up working against you in public opinion. Will a victory here work to further your cause? I would suggest that instead of taking the resources you spend here, invest in ad campaigns, political lobbying and court cases that affect policy, which has more impact on life than a symbol. This might be a better use of your resources. I know, I don't see the overall strategy, but as an advocate of gay marriage, I saw the fallout of pushing an issue at a point where it may have been more prudent to keep one's mouth shut and working stealthily to influence public opinion in its place.

HMMMMmmmmmm...

I can't help but agree with the last two posts. This is definitely going to back fire. I mean, I understand that 12 foot tall steel crosses funded by taxpayers is a bit much, but this is Utah we're talking about. Practically a western Saudi Arabia (and yes I've been there.)

Is it just a local chapter of AA that filed the suit or is this coming straight from HQ? Is there a link to pics of the crosses?
American Jews filed suit against the Utah Highway Patrol Commander and the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Transportation seeking the removal of large steel swastikas erected adjacent to state highways bearing the beehive logo of the Highway Patrol. The swastikas have been erected with permission from the state by the Utah Highway Patrol Association, a private corporation that aids and supports troopers. The German swastikas mark locations where troopers have been killed in the line of duty.

Fundmantalist Christians filed suit against the Utah Highway Patrol Commander and the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Transportation seeking the removal of large steel middle-fingers erected adjacent to state highways bearing the beehive logo of the Highway Patrol. The middle-fingers have been erected with permission from the state by the Utah Highway Patrol Association, a private corporation that aids and supports troopers. The middle-fingers mark locations where troopers have been killed in the line of duty.

Then there's this...

Is "sexy" a "lewd" word? They seem to think so in Tennessee. The word was banned when it appeared on a sign that was advertising hair-care products in Spring Hill, Tennessee. As a suave Tennessean explained: "The city's sign ordinance says you can't have any lewd language," he said. "I know it's the name of a product, but people objected to the word 'sexy' on the sign."

I think it has something to do with community standards.
