If the fact that most Americans believe that the first humans just magically appeared out of thin air, fully grown, then proceeded to have incest to populate the planet weren't so sad and pathetic, it would be laughable.

There's only one possible response to such overt gibberish:
Prove It.

Put up or shut up.

This is the nation that put a man on the moon? Defeated the Nazis? Designed, built, and tested nuclear weapons? Was the first to learn how to fly? Gave us fast computers? Gave us the telephone? The lightbulb? The Space Shuttle? The freedom that allowed great minds like Einstein, Carl Sagan, Bell, Henry Ford to improve our lives in uncountable ways?

Oh well, it was a good run while it last.

Shall we open up the floor for baseless accusations of witchcraft and sorcery? We can then have a nice little trial by ordial. If they live they are obviously in league with the beast, if they die, they die an good christian death.

When you know an ancient class of wizards made man out of stardust, there's no need to prove anything, only to write fantasy books describing the process.

This is the nation that put a man on the moon?
Well, exactly. I want to know how this particular statistic has changed over the years. When I was a kid, there didn't seem to be any question about evolution as a whole. Oh, sure there was the creationist bullshit that my dad and others in his church liked to play around with, but no one in the larger arena took it seriously.

What happened? Behe. Dembski. The Discovery Institute. And all the while they built their "case" with the public, the scientific community virtually ignored them. It seemed as if the scientist didn't believe it was worth wasting time on what they thought was an already settled debate.

But the public loves conflict and controversy. That's why the new new creationism is gaining in popularity. The scientific community needs to stop being so smug. They need to stand up and deliver some controversy of their own.

Anyway, on a recent Huffington Post blog someone had a pretty good idea:
If they want equal time in our public schools, let us demand that atheism gets equal time in sunday school! Teach the controversy!
