The Armageddon stories in the bible are all written in the context of happening in their lifetime. It clearly didn't happen, it never will. My father apparently repeated a lot of this drivel around the time of my birth (incidentally just a day following the Jonestown mass suicide - generally known as the "Jonestown massacre" which is a little distruthful).

He shut up about it for apparently 26 years, and has since taken it up again. Luckily I moved out a long time ago ;)

It's funny how much of the bible is taken out of context and spun to make this story of impending rapture (for the believers) and doom (for the unbelievers) to keep people lock-step with xtianity.

Let's have Rope Leash go door-to-door and offer to help the True Believers return to his fold.

Yep, put your head in this noose and jump for your Lord and Master.

Praise God and pass the Rope...

How many voted in the Red States? We are gonna need a sh*t load of rope.

Are you willing to die for your beliefs? Well, are you, punk?

Go ahead, make my day!
Girl at work says ?there sure are a lot of disasters happening now? with a special sparkle in her eyes. I said, ?please don?t tell me you think this is armageddon and the apocalypse and all that.? She says, ?well, there sure are a lot of earthquakes and hurricanes and things like that . . .?(university senior, goverment major, catholic).

I conclude they want to believe in something, anything, and choose to hang their hat on Doom. Cuz bible says so. They want to be right so badly they?ll invest in being right about destruction. And they have the bomb, the western nations, so they can make it so, if they want to. Because bible says jeezuz won?t come on down until we?re all half dead so let?s get it on !

Of course, we all know Armageddon is coming. There is proof in the bible that it will happen in 2006, according to Michael Drosnin's book, The Bible Code:
The Rapture Cult mindset is just a convenient little mental trick that allows the righties to abdicate their responsibility to the rest of the World. I can't tell how many times I my father told me "not to worry about the environment, God is coming to set things right soon." How nice.

Anybody here read anything from the "Left Behind" series? My Dad's a huge fan, and it happens to be the pulpiest trash ever written for mental consumption. I mean it's REALLY trashy. Super macho nonsense abounds, but in a way it's an interesting read because of the incredibly strange characterization of non-christians. Maybe I'll find a copy and post some juicy examples.

But anyway, there's a part of me that hopes they are right. Suddenly all the Southern Baptists disappear!!! Sounds like heaven on Earth to me.
Oh no! Hurricanes are going to steal AIDS' thunder, because as we all know, THAT is Jesus' divine retribution to our homosexual-infested country.

.

I wonder how long it will take normal people to realize this is all a crock of shit, and that Christians have been predicting this crap forever, and been wrong every time.

atomictesting: "The Armageddon stories in the bible are all written in the context of happening in their lifetime."
Well put. Unfortunately, the 'true' believers have been able to extend this nonsense. We have preterists, historicists, and futurists, all of whom have managed to get great mileage out of that fear. Hell, I remember reading revelations last year, & getting scared to death by the bloody thing. Then I did the research.

"Over a thousand years ago, everyone thought the end was near. It never came. And yet, a few years after the 1st millenium, the world was covered w/a robe of white churches." - Frank Black - Millenium.

I read Hal Lindsay many, many years ago (The Late Great Planet Earth). Until this year, I had maintained that the End of Days was around the corner. 9/11 was the nail in the coffin for me. I went a bit apeshit (like the rest of the country), but it wasn't till this year that I sat down & examined all of this obsolete baggage I'd been dragging around all these years.
Freedom never felt so sweet.

I remember my mormon mother telling me as a child that we were living in "the end times". I hated that! I mean, hey, I was new here. I liked what I saw of the world and wanted to see more of it.

What is really revolting is that we're told that all these disasters are a warning to *us*, implying that all the people who die in earthquakes, floods, etc, are disposible in order to provide a warning to *us*.

When I began my inquiry into the mindset of atheism, I logically began my search on the Internet.

I was first greeted by a site which, as described by Mr. Tabash, was little more than a treatise of religion bashing.

Presuming that site to be an anomaly, I continued my search. I was surprised to discover that atheism is little more than anti-theism. How disappointing.

The lead to this thread reflects that mindset. And it does little to provide a haven for disillussioned theists who are fleeing the cold reality of cultish insanity in search of the warmth of human kindness.

Or, as one aptly noted, "My study of atheism reveals it to be one of a thousand philosophical disciplines oblivious to its own nescience, embracing intolerance of variant views and steeped in arrogance. In short, atheism embraces all the narcisstic stigma that typifies religion."

Perhaps it's time for humanists to exchange anti-theism for humanitarianism.
