Popular Demand: Islam Talk

Peaceful religion or primitive cult? Your opinions here.By the way, Ibn Warraq’s great book “Why I am not a Muslim” is available from American Atheists’ website. Highly recommended.

oops, once on the page click on founding fathers on the center left.

  2. reluctantatheist says:

TXatheist: ummm…some of the info is wrong on that page.
Jefferson, Paine, Franklin, yes. Madison was a Unitarian (I think)?
George Washington attended communicant services, but was very lukewarm, never took communion. No clear views on his part. Episcopalean?
The big 3, TJ, TP, BJ. Yes. B. Rush, 4 instance, very Xtian (bit of a loon, though). I forget what denomination Hamilton was.
As stated before, by r4d, politicians gear towards their audience (as witnessed by Huffington, for instance).

    reluct..
I’m not disagreeing with you, I just wanted to point out that TJ was not a christian other than he could appreciate the bible in the sense of any other book. He cut and pasted it to create the jefferson bible. I will never claim to know exactly how the FF felt about xianity but that they were skeptical of it. If you find a better sight please let me know.

I know that this is not quite on this thread, but I was wondering who is an atheist leader right now. I have heard of Dawkins.
The reason I ask is that in the 18th century there were a lot of leaders that were either deists, or atheists. It seems that since the enlightenment of the 18th and 19th centuries, there have been less and less prominent figures that are vocal about their lack of belief.
I also see with trepidation the enormous rise in the numbers of islam, the continued railroading by the RR in this country, and the fierce grasp that the Roman Catholic church has in Latin America.
All these events seem to lead to another dark age where Islam and Christianity are locked in battle, and everything and anything that is scientific, real, and for the betterment of human kind is relegated, and forgotten.

I don’t think I have a specific leader but appreciate the efforts of people. Newdow is an atheist and I appreciate him willing to step forward. Ellen Johnson leads a worthy cause and Dan Barker/FFRF do things I find honorable. One leader? Not for me personally, just honorable acts from people. There are xians that do honorable acts too that I appreciate, TFN in texas and Barry Lynn at AU.org

I AM. Cast off your religious shackles and FOLLOW THE RAINBOW! (cue freaky rave music and the sound of millions of screaming mormons)

    No, I understand exactly what you’re saying. I agree w/you 100%
Problem is, some of the Xtians here won’t even listen when you provide a source. The Deism site you listed is slanted. I’ve done a bit of research.

Truth be told, most websites are. Mine, deists, even skeptics. I’ve provided simple websites as interesting reads (not cited as sources) & been snorted at for my trouble (reductio ad absurdum, poisoning the well, etc.). I for 1 find the skeptics’ sites to be more factual, & well-researched, truth be told. Not all, but a huge % of them.

http://www.foundingfathers.info is a good site. I think earlyamerica.org. infidels.org is a great site, because they criticize their own, as well as the opposition’s viewpoints.

& sure, everything is subjective, regardless of what some of our resident Xtians claim. Value judgements that are objective are hard to come by.

But while we are the majority on this site, we are the minority in this world, & as such, we need to adhere to facts more strictly than the other side.

It’s a major pain in the ass, to be sure. Because even if we DO put forth the facts, show the logic, it’s snubbed anyways. It’s pretty much a war of attrition at this point. We can only hope to chip away at the static mindsets, & hope to sway a few. Ain’t hopeless, hard work, true.

But for the hope of our species surviving? It’s worth it.

Ummm…do you have a dental plan? LOL.

  9. anadrol says:

    r4d,

Are there Lepricorns involved. Please say there is.

    Rainbows,

    Skittles and

    Lepricorns….

mmmm, followers need to talk with an Irish accent. Communion consists of a pint of guinness and the holymen wear green.

  10. anadrol says:

Is there a pot’o'gold at the end?

  11. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

no dental, but lots and lots of free candy.

no gold (I hate gold), but faster internet access with no spam or thread trolls.

  12. Rosemary says:

Some of you erudite guys tell me who said this: Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.

I found that somewhere and it was quoted without attribution.

  13. reluctantatheist says:

    Rosemary: Denis Diderot.
    Truthfully, I googled it.

  14. reluctantatheist says:

    r4d: Oh, great, like I don’t have nuff cavities!….
What’s the doctrine/dogma/party line at your church?

  15. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

    Reluctant,

    Only three commandments:

    1) Debate well.

    2) Debate often.

    3) Challenge everyone.

    Amen

  16. reluctantatheist says:

    r4d: Ahem.
    Ramen!
Oh, that’s right. Not a subsect of the FSM cult, right?
    Rightey-oh!

  17. reluctantatheist says:

Rosemary: where’s that website? I need to send off a serious email. Not citing sources! Cor! Like we don’t have enough issues to deal with.
    Grrrrrr. LOL.

  18. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

Oh, I just thought of the fourth, most important commandment:

    4) And always challenge yourself

  19. Rosemary says:

    Reluctant,

Sorry, I don’t remember what the site was. I skip around to different sites so much. I should have made a note. :(

    Rosemary: Just teasin’, dear.

Hey RobW, I loved the links you posted!!!! By the way where are you from? I have a cousin named Rob and his last name starts with a W, and he is an atheist as well. Right now he is in Iraq doing contracting work or something like that, but he lives in TX.

The majority of my family has become atheist over the last few years and some of us have always been. I have to say I am very lucky to have so many atheist family members. :)
