Mark the date for a great debate!

ANNOUNCING:Dave Silverman (yo!) will square off against Bill Devlin (founder of the Urban Family Council) in a re-match of their first joint TV appearance 8 years ago. Topics will run the gamut of faith, politics, creationism, faith-based initiatives, and the existence of deities. Audience questions will be taken (format may change).

Monday, September 12 at 7pm in the Philly Free Library, 1901 Vine Street, Philadelphia. Admission is free. For more information on the event, call the PFL at 215.585.5415

I betcha there will be a lot more theists in the room, since Bill’s huge (HUGE!!) congregation is based in Philly, so Atheists are strongly encouraged to attend to even the scales a bit.

Damn. I’d be there if I wasn’t 13 and could drive. Good luck.

  2. avatar mryder66 says:

Any chance of publishing a transcript? I’d love to be there – but I can’t see that happening logistically.

  3. avatar DNAunion says:

I’d go too, if I still lived up north. But it would now take me two days to drive up, and two more to drive back. Now, if anyone would care to pay my airfare! :-)

  4. avatar suffenus says:

Good luck from Canada. Give him a Maple Leaf. Tell him it’s a fig leaf. See if he knows the difference.

  5. avatar Charlie B says:

Damn, it’s less than an hour away from me, but I have to work Monday nights. Maybe I’ll see if anyone is willing to switch with me.

  6. avatar Dangerman says:

Good luck from the west coast, since very few of us well be going…if any. A transcirpt would be great is at all possible, I’d love to at least read what happened!

  7. avatar flanonblvr says:

give him hell or heaven or whatever.

P.S. when do we get a chance to meet and have some fun debating our different views?….Im in Colo Spgs, but dont mind traveling a little…where is the cable show “The Atheist Viewpoint” taped at?

  11. avatar notyourdaddy says:

I would like to see someone debate James Kennedy PHD, I would be interested to know if his degree is from a xtian degree mill also.
As Im not able to attend davids debate I will just say “go get em dave”.

  12. avatar escher says:

    NYD,

Much as I would be gleeful to uncover the phony credentials of a televangelist, it appears that Kennedy has a legimitate PhD from NYU. At least, that’s what his bio says and there seems no good reason to doubt it.

  13. avatar Pyro Shark says:

Hmm… maybe I could hitch hike from the west coast…

  14. avatar dsilverman says:

LOL I have phony credentials too! I have a Doctor of Divinity from the Universal Life Church. I got it for free because I mentioned them on TV.

Why did I go through the effort? Whenever I go up against an opponent with a Dr. from a degree mill, I demand to be addressed as “Dr. Silverman” as well (if my opponent has a REAL doctorate, I don’t use it).

The result — I’ve never been addressed as “Dr. Silverman” on TV, but I’ve gotten a few of my opponents to be addressed as Mr./Mz instead of Dr.

    Heh heh.

Aside to DBryant – I can’t invite you on the Atheist Viewpoint, but if you have a radio show (I thought that’s what we were discussing), please email me the specifics and we can try to work something in.

Mr. Silverman: Kudos, & good luck. Is there any possibility this can be a WebCast? & what issues will U be addressing?
Here’s an interesting quote, from http://www.hellblazer.com/archives/2003/04/religious_conse.html:
‘The rally featured about Azaelf a dozen activists wearing black-and-white striped prison garb or old-fashioned, English-style police uniforms. The activists sang songs railing against liberal efforts at “thought control” and “intolerance” of Christian conservative views.

The Traditional Values Coalition is leading a petition drive in support of Santorum.

Bill Devlin, a Democratic committeeman in the city of Philadelphia and vice president of the Urban Family Council, says liberal critics are playing a political hand in going after Santorum.

“This is character assassination because George Bush is doing so well, there’s nothing really they can go after him on,” said Devlin.’
I 4 one am getting fairly tired of this ‘Xtian’ persecution/martyr complex. They’ve been in control 4 FAR 2 long, have hampered progress on so many levels & in so many ways, & have done little in the way of advancing civilization. & yes, I am emphasizing track records, because that is how we evaluate groups & individuals. That is how we imprison criminals, & examine & root out seditionists, fascists, child molesters, serial killers, etc.
Mr. Silverman – if U require any aid in research, I am available. U do have access to my email address (I assume), since I am ‘reluctant’ to post it in a public forum. Anything I can do to help.

OK. I’m going. Just became member here. I’ve only recently started to call myself an atheist after deciding that calling myself an agnostic was a cowardly avidance of an important isssue.

  17. avatar Spotlight says:

Great, a debate between a delusional theist and a delusional Atheist. Are Gentile/Goyim Atheists allowed? After all we being (mis)represnted by a self declared jew.
Thanks Ellen Johnson for ruining American Atheists! We need a president who thinks with their head not with whats between their legs and isn’t manipulated by the person they are sleeping with.

  18. avatar Chibacca says:

I will do my best to be there and support the cause.

  19. avatar paulio says:

I’ll be there with my Reality Rules T-Shirt. It’s right down the street.

    Go get em Dave!

  20. avatar dsilverman says:

Bill’s actually a nice guy and a formidable speaker. I’ve debated against him on one show or another at least six times (only one had this broad a subject matter).

Should be lively — Mercy is for the weak.
