In Lev 18:22, God tells moses "Thou shalt not lie with man as with a woman. It is an abomination." This is used as a singular proof that God frowns on homosexuality, and is the bedrock of the anti-gay movement.

THEN IN THE SAME CONTEXT AND IN THE SAME CONVERSTION, Lev 24:16 reads (and the lord spake unto Moses, saying...) "And he that Blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall surely stone him".

That silly God. Almost makes him sound like he is actually endorsing mass murder based solely on theology. Nah...

There are hundreds if not thousands of contradictions and hateful comments in the Bible. It could be discussed for years, decades or millenia-as it has. We will all be preaching to the choir if we keep pressing on these issues to ourselves.

What we need to do is discuss how we can make the world a better place. Many of us have spoken out about the Separation of Church and State; this is wonderful.

I propose that we take further action; that we, as an atheist community, should endorse and partake in community service both in the US and abroad.

We reject the Faith Based Initiative but we don't often provide for alternative spending that will aid the homeless and otherwise needy.

The atheist community should take responsibility and action for fighting ever expanding American and global problems. We should speak out with a communal voice to prevent the spread of AIDS and malaria in Africa, support sustaniable development, work for national health care and an increase to the minimum wage.

We need to take care of each other like the Palmers who have been ostracized from Mississippi for their speaking out against institutionalized prayer in their public school.

We need to build a stronger community through networking and more frequent events so that we build stronger personal relationships.

We should be talking about and working to solve these bigger issues rather than preaching to the choir about Bible verses even though it is fun and sad every now and then.

I am a Humanist and hope that all rational thinking atheists will eventually come to this same conclusion.

David - being a Christian once, it's pretty easy to just throw out the Old Testament and lash onto the New Testament. No more 10 commandments or any other funny rules because it's trumped by treat/love others as how you would like to be treated. I could be wrong, but I'd be a little surprised if the New Test advocates violence.(carried out by man against another).

What they hear....
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

What they don't hear....
Matthew 18:9
And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. (Download any porn recently?)

Revelation 3:16
So, because you are lukewarm?neither hot nor cold?I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
I must say that I agree with Ian Thomas. It's okay to have these threads where we say what's wrong with religion, but we could focus on taking action in areas that aren't directly concerned with atheism; since we all know that humanity has to fend for itself, we should try to commence with the fending.

And I'd contribute to the quotes, but regrettably I have not yet read the Bible. If you like, I could quote from the bible I wrote...but it's getting late.

I need the ammo. Inevitably - I'm surrounded and outnumbered and arguing with "Western, Materialistic, Judgmental, Better than Thou Christians". I could keep my mouth shut - but I fear this will only encourage them - and our President.... I really don't even care if they convert to Atheism, but they should drop the non-Christian parts i.e. materialism, judging, bombing, etc.

Finally.. this is fun. Any recommendations on other posting places to practice my arguments? Christian/Religious right site would do the trick...Know your enemy.

Ahh, my friends, you miss the big picture.

Look at these threads. Favorite verses, favorite elevator pitches, perhaps some contradictions or predictions. This is not fluff and pablum-puking -- it's good ammunition for other readers.

I believe everyone needs new ideas. I got some good ideas from those elevator pitches!

American Atheists has been fighting in this effort for 45 years(or so) now. T see what's up now,
check out the "Atheists in Foxholes" and "Godless Americans PAC" links to the right.

As always, please feel free to email me with suggested subjects. I can't promise I'll answer them all quickly, though.

Know the truth and the truth will set you free. Jesus. well the religionistas won't be having any of that truth stuff and the politicins won't be having any of that freedom stuff. In spite of the fact that both claim to stand for those very virtues. Yep it's sure to get you killed every time.LOL

I was taught to search the scriptures whenever I had a problem. The answer would be in the scriptures. My family read the King James version.

In context, I suppose this scripture makes perfect sense (rolling my eyes). However, you can imagine the shock I got as a pre-teenager to find out what was included in the Bible.

Thanks to this scripture, I read the whole Bible back then just to see what other important history and lessons God wanted preserved.

Oh, I wasn't allowed to read The Catcher in the Rye, because that had cuss words.

I still chuckle at my memory of finding out for the first time the Bible was not really a very nice book.

Without further ado, my favorite scripture:

2 Kings 18:27
But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
My favorite Bible verse is the one about "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," because in the entire Bible (yes, I've actually read the whole thing--if nothing else, it shocks the Christians when they find out I know the Bible as well or better than they do) this is the only verse I found to be logical and actually make good sense. If I had to pick a second favorite, it would be the story about the Good Samaritan, but that's just because I happen to enjoy helping others. I don't necessarily agree with the Christian view that one is morally obligated and duty-bound to do so.

I am aware, by the way, that the "do unto others" concept is not unique to the Bible; most other holy books contain a similar scripture in them somewhere, although worded differently. My least favorite verse is "all the rest of them."
