Here’s a nod to ABC’s issue of 20/20 which gave a great expose on the Jewish Kaballah cult. Sure, it’s a cult, a rip-off, and a Scientology-like scam (complete with high-intellect celebrities like Paris Hilton and Ashton Kutcher). They even have $40 water that cures cancer, $28 bracelets made of string, and Hebrew text that protects your “energy” — even if you don’t speak Hebrew!But what I liked the best is the huge mansions, owned by the cult, where the practitioners live. Beautiful mansions, yet on paper they’ve taken a vow of poverty. Their defense? Simple. “If the Catholics can do it, so can we”. They’re right on that one!I fully recommend everyone read this and remember — your taxes pay for this. Everything they make, they keep. You pay taxes for them!

Sorry, but I can’t fault them too much. If Paris gave me a call, I’d drive up to the mansion in a heartbeat. As, far as tax free – I suppose you’d have to change the law for everybody – including Atheists.org.
maddogstu, the tax-free status of orgs like AA and religious groups is not covered by the same regulation, I believe. I’m not a lawyer or legal authority, but I suspect that if religious groups were subject to the same scrutiny as orgs like AA, they could not get away with this kind of abuse. So, what needs to be done is to do away with special tax-free status for religious organizations where they are relatively free of srutiny for abuse.
Maybe somebody from AA can fill us in.

The best way to deal with this is to be informed. It isn’t just the nonsense that is being promoted it’s the idea that a piece of string can have miraculous powers,(but get yours while the supply lasts only $15.00). When I see people with these symbols I generally inform them of what I just posted here and then tell them that these symbols mark them as gullible. Typical is for me to mind my own biz but some have come back to thank me weeks later and to let me know that they were embarrassed by their gullibility. The word does get through to some. PS keep up the good job your doing.

But the only thing this fad is doing is helping is social status which is pretty F**king sad.

Part of the answer is that there is no “we” since American Atheists is not a democratic organization, it is controlled by one woman and her boyfriend.
Joining a cult is just stupid (and even a little scary). I don’t understand what’s so appealing about Scientology or Kabbalah or anything like that. For your info: $cientology is this wacko belief system based on L. Ron Hubbard’s science fiction novels. The church is supported by all these celebrities who give the “church” oodles of $$$$. $cientologists have a very bad reputation, considering that they sue the freakin’ crap out of anyone who insults them.
Hollywood and religion,in my mind, do not mix by any means. Being a film buff, I’ve read biographies on actors who claimed to be “devout christians” and, yet, participated in scandalous behavior that contradicts everything they believe. Who knows what skeletons Mel “The Passion” Gibson has in his closet. In fact, publicists often tell actors to keep quiet about their religion up until recently when religion’s become the big “craze”.
