So president W has issued a statement yesterday that even in the face of huge successes in other countries, he won’t support increased funding for Stem Cell research.Just as a reminder, the original law that virtually eliminated federal funding for such research was a “temporary measure” so the issue of whether such research was valid. Remember? Well, since then, the Isrealis used stem cells to cure Parkinson’s Disease in mice, and the South Koreans sucessfully cloned perfect customized stem cells and may be on the verge of curing diabetes. See any ethical problems there?Even the GOP is now supporting the process, and still Bush would stop research.Well, he can’t stop research. He can slow it down (so more people suffer and die before a cure is found), and he can let other countries like Isreal and South Korea get the international patents on the technology. In a nutshell, he is hurting humanity and the US balance of trade at the same time. It’s a good move! Much better than admitting he’s wrong and that dogma shouldn’t impede real science. Yay W!

Killing an embryo is no different than not fertilizing the egg all women of child bearing age loose once a month. Doing either of the above prevents the creation of a human being. So how many human beings have mr. and mrs. Bush prevented from coming into this world.
Hi there. A Singaporean atheist here. Just dropping by to say that I’m glad there are vocal American atheists around. We people in other nations get pretty alarmed when morons who believe in resurrections and demon possession have control of ICBM’s.
LeFire, I can only imagine. Do you know how frustrating it is to live here and have a moron like this as a president?
Has anyone given serious thought as to how atheists can organize and influence public policy? And I don’t mean having a “THERE IS NO GOD” rally or anything, as that is likely to alienate everyone.
He can slow it down, but he won’t be president forever. And when his time is up (in 1,335 days) we can just hope the next person will be intelligent enough to see the potential that research in this field can offer.
I agree. It is extremely frutrating to have this man as our president who puts false spirits before humanity.
You would have thought we would have learned from his father.
I think we do need to start a public campaign. As much as I don’t like proselytizing, I believe with the direction the brain washers are going, we need to take a stand and start educating the masses. We are too far in the future to continue allowing superstition to have so much influence.
It’s true that he will be gone, but not for years and that is just lost time for people who have diseases that may respond to gene therapy breakthroughs from this research. And for what? So that he can pacify his party’s fan base? If life is so sacred, why aren’t we doing all we can to help those who are unquestionably alive and suffering? All the Chicken Littles who talk about this leading to human cloning, etc. can just pipe down because that could be stopped in an instant. This is so not a slippery slope issue.
PS Loved the horta reference.
Dogma helped get him elected, so he’s got to stick with what works. Besides, if Kerry Underwood can be the American Idol, then we must be surrounded by bible toting rednecks. Our best chance on this issue is to convince Bush we can use stem cells to clone oil wells.
Bush should be embracing stem cell research…afterall, it’s his only hope to grow a new brain that works.
His stance isn’t too surprising.
Remember how immediately after 9/11 he REALLY poured on the god references every time he spoke. Made me sick to my stomach.
He just had to suck up that emotional christian vote in a time of crisis and cement his solidarity with the christian right.
Hi There. My first time here. I am so glad and relieved to find people who think as I do.
My opinion, is that we do need to take action. But real action, I agree that just standing around holding up slogans is not the way to go. We need to focus specifically on some of these loonies such as Rick Santorum. He recently compared secularism to Hitler. Of course he is ignorant, but he is very effective at brainwashing. We need to create images of what his America will look like. i.e. Women barefoot, pregnant, uneducated and in the kitchen of course. Your children forced to pray to their particular church dogma, etc.
The government putting fear of life and death into the school system and all rational thought and science pushed aside.
Thanks!
This gives me a somewhat unrelated thought. How about setting up some sort of organization that gives scholarships to free thinking non-theists? After I attended my brother’s high school graduation and seeing all of the local churches giving scholarships to all of these bible beaters the idea came to me. If we were denied the ability to give the scholarship then we could sue for equal access, or none at all and give the religious zealots less visiblity, or us more visibility. Thoughts?
Hi all,
For those interested, check out GAMPAC (a godless PAC) and the American Atheists Scholarship Page
Hello from Italy where later this month there will be a referendum on this issue. The cardinals and religiously orientated political groups are telling people not to vote because unless a certain percentage turn out the referendum will be invalid. This way all those too lazy, too confused and too stupid to vote will be counted (by the opponents of this research) as being agianst it. It shows how they are prepared to make a mockery of democracy in order to protect the ‘souls’ of the 30,000 embryoes currently shivering in the freezers of the research labs. One scientist put a nice perspective on it during a TV debate. He said, “If it were a fish embryo, you’d just have to put it in water and it would turn into a fish. Mammel embryoes need a mother. Currently there 30,000 embryoes in Italian freezers and 0 mothers waiting to turn them into humans!”
Mabye a peace offering to “W” would help our cause. Whatta say we all pitch in and buy Bush a years supply of snack pretzels. That should fix a LOT of problems.
Remember Mr. Bush wants to “err on the side of life” and keep those in a persistent vegitative state alive artificially… but go ahead and let people suffer and die of diseases that we may be able to help with stem cell research..
Right.
On sept. 11 Doobyuh was reading to grade school kids, People of his intellectual equal. That sums up what I think of the faithful. They act like children and never mature. Laura said (oct. 2004)We don’t even know if stem cell research will provide any cures. And I thought Well at least the white house is consistently stupid. The only way to really harm these people is to take power away from them and their benefactors,ie. don’t give them your money. Don’t buy anything from them don’t support people who support them. What a dispicable bunch of swindlers these people are.
News from Italy: The bigots ‘won’ the referendum in the end.

Now that is just plain spiteful cutting off the rest of the countrys advance into medical science and not just that they are denying people kids. All the goverments need to stop listening to Stupid Ass Benedict’s and the Pope and all the rest of the crew, they should keep their opinions to themselves and not drag everyone into their BS, so what happens now to the other 24% that were for having a bit of intellect in that country, will they just get hushed again, What im trying to say is they should stop enforcing laws on people who dont believe in religion, because that has nothing to do with them, they made their choice by putting their shackles on and reading into some myth, but dont let everyone join them nutters, this is why i dont want UK to go and join the EU.
The UK is already in the EU it’s just that we haven’t adopted the Euro and Blair has just denied us the chance to vote NO to the constitution. Scientists in Britain recently cloned a human embryo so we obviously have a different mind set on this. I agree though – the last thing we need is Catholic influenced EU putting a stop to the research. In reality however, I don’t think that would ever happen.
I agree with Gary, although I do so as an American, not a European. From my experience, Europeans are far less tolerant of religious intrusion into politics than Americans.
The Italian referendum is a clear exception.
Indeed, it is not uncommon for me to get emails from europeans who are flummoxed by the need for American Atheists to exist, simply because religion in their country is not a significant force.
