“Coming out of the closet” is a term most associated with gays and lesbians announcing to the world that they are homosexual. Few regret it, having found their way toward a more open and satisfying life.

The Jews are awaiting their Messiah. The Christians eagerly expect the return of Jesus Christ. The Moslems anticipate the twelfth Imam. And the Atheists waiting to "Let George Do It" idly watch as the world goes to hell in a wheelbarrow.

As this tale of madness unfolded, the intellectuals of the world took no part in it: they abandoned the playing out of the drama to the loons on earth, ill will to men.

Salman Rushdie and his book The Satanic Verses became the dominant subject of the forty-first international book fair in Frankfurt. This had not at all been planned, however. Publicity for this book was not desired.
