Rally Friday to Protest “America For Jesus”
Not With OUR Bill of Rights You Don’t!
This event is over, see photos here.
Friday, October 22, 2004 thousands of religious right
activists will descend on our nation’s capital for the
“America for Jesus” Rally.
The organizers of this event say that they will be engaging in
18 hours of “prayer and fasting.” “Bishop” John
Gimenez, who heads America for Jesus, denies that it is political, and
insists “Our nation is in severe moral decline. We are simply
gathering to help God to help our country.”
“From pornography to homosexuality to abortion to racism,
this country is out of control. We’re meeting to pray.”
But a religious right agenda is clear. Endorsers of “America for
Jesus” include Pat Robertson (founder, Christian Coalition);
National Association of Evangelicals; and even entertainer Pat Boone.
As for “Bishop” Gimenez, he and Robertson have supported
oppressive theocratic governments such as the now-deposed regime of
Liberian dictator Charles Taylor. While Robertson was trying to obtain
lucrative diamond mining contracts with Taylor’s “Christian”
government, Gimenez tried to mobilize the poor and terrorized people under
Taylor’s regime with a “Liberia for Jesus” Rally.
(Read more about it on Flash Line).
With just days to go until our national election, “America for
Jesus” is just more grandstanding and mobilization on behalf of the
religious right social agenda -- banning abortion, undermining rights for
gays, women and other groups, and breaching the wall of separation
between church and state.
Won’t you join us this Friday, October 22, 2004 in our nation’s
capitol by speaking out, and demonstrating that America stands for
constitutional rights, not “Jesus”?
