AMERICAN ATHEISTS ACTION ALERT May 8, 2002 ALABAMA ATHEIST GROUPS TO OPPOSE COALITION RALLY IN SUPPORT OF COMMANDMENTS, ROY MOORE American Atheists State Director Larry Darby, Blair Scott of The Mobile Atheists and others are putting out the word -- join together and rally on behalf of the separation of church and state this Saturday, May 11 on the steps of the capitol building in Montgomery Alabama. The state Christian Coalition is organizing its own support demonstration on behalf of Chief Justice Roy Moore "for upholding the moral foundation of our law and in keeping our Ten Commandments monument." That "monument" is a 5,280-LB. granite cenotaph which Moore -- using his authority as Alabama's highest judicial officer -- ordered placed last year in the foyer of the State Judicial Building. Moore has blustered that he has the authority to order placement of this blatantly sectarian religious monument, and that the Commandments are the basis of law and authority in the United States. Blair Scott of The Mobile Atheists disagrees. "The Bible is not the 'moral foundation of our law' and the Ten Commandments monument is in direct violation of the state and federal constitutions. Moore swore an oath to uphold Alabama law -- not his particular religion." Joining in this demonstration will be the Wiregrass Atheists, Birmingham Atheists, Skeptics-Freethought of North Alabama and others. You can help by joining in this peaceful demonstration. Meet at 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 11 at the intersection of S. Hull and Alabama in Montgomery. From there, the group will march to the capitol building. Bring legible and tasteful signs. Some suggested slogans include: NO MOORE HATE For more information, visit the web site for the Office of the Alabama State Director, American Atheists at http://www.atheists.org/al or contact Larry Darby through ldarby@atheists.org.
